United Way falls short of goal

Although falling short of its goal, the St. Marys Area United Way has succeeded in raising $198,000 as part of its 2010 campaign efforts.
"Getting to our goal would have been ideal, but the fact that we are able to fund our agencies at the level we raised is gratifying," emphasized Sherron McGowan, executive director. "Our whole mission is to allocate additional funding to the agencies."
According to McGowan, the organization chose to raise this year's campaign goal to $205,000 after seeing signs the economy was picking up.

Geci suspended, appeals ruling

Ridgway Borough Police Officer and part-time Elk County Sheriff's Department Deputy Shawn Geci was recently handed a 30-day suspension without pay from borough council.
The suspension comes while Geci is appealing a Jan. 20 ruling by Cameron County District Judge Alvin Brown, who found the officer guilty of two gaming law violations which supposedly occurred Dec. 3, 2010.
According to Ridgway mayor Guillermo Udarbe, borough officials and council were aware of Geci's appeal when it voted to slap him with a 30-day suspension without pay.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is the largest youth mentoring organization in the United States, with more than 400 affiliate agencies nationwide. The Guidance Center has been affiliated with the National Organization since 1990, operating Big Brothers Big Sisters programs first in McKean County, expanding to Elk County in 2001 and to Jefferson County in 2008.

Despite rumors, Ridgway drinking supply adequate

'Soup'er benefit for county arts programs

The Elk County Council on the Arts (ECCOTA) will be feeding both body and mind at its annual benefit next week. The council's fifth annual Feed the Arts Soup Benefit will be held Thursday, March 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Activity Center in downtown St. Marys, with all proceeds benefiting ECCOTA and its arts programming in Elk County.

Fox Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Scott Surra presented the department's annual report at the recent Fox Twp. Supervisors meeting.
In 2010 the Fox Twp. Fire Dept. was dispatched 100 times in 2010. The total estimated structural fire loss in 2010 in $448,000.

Supervisors approve new items

The Fox Township Supervisors approved several new business items at Wednesday evening's meeting.
One of the motions approved was to establish the Toby Water Board. The supervisors then appointed five members to the board, each of whose terms expires on December 31 of the appointed year. Toby Water board members include Mike Agosti with a term expiring in 2011, Mike Keller until 2012, Joe Largey until 2013, George Swanson until 2014 and Janet Ott until 2015.

Vollmer arrested in Florida prostitution sting operation

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. – The Lee County Sheriff's Office in Bonita Springs, Fla. reports that John Joseph Vollmer, 64, of St. Marys, was arrested at 7:40 p.m. on Feb. 23 and charged with the solicitation of prostitution.
According to police, on Feb. 23 the Lee County Sheriff's Office Narcotics/Vice unit conducted a vice operation in the area of Bonita Springs, Fla. The focus of the operation was to make contact with females offering sexual services on the internet. In addition, the unit also focused on the males soliciting females from these internet web sites.
