Posteraro honored for 46 years of service

The St. Marys Recreation Board honored Denny Posteraro, recently retired recreation director, for 46 years of service to the city's recreation program during their meeting on Wednesday evening at St. Marys City Hall.
Devin Brock, rec board member, presented Posteraro with a citation from the city, as well as a plaque from the recreation board. Rec board members also had cake and ice cream in honor of Posteraro, and had a number of scrapbooks on display that he made over the years to showcase the coverage of park activities.

Community Nurses event to educate on end-of-life decisions

In an effort to educate the public about end-of-life options, Community Nurses, Inc. is sponsoring "Preparing for a Graceful Journey," a free event open to the public that will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 9 from 6-8 p.m. in the small conference room at The Red Fern in St. Marys.

Fox Twp. budget available for review

On Wednesday evening the Fox Township Supervisors approved to advertise the proposed 2012 budget, which has no tax increase and totals $2.39 million in expenses from all funds.
The budget is available for review on the township's website at www.foxtownship.com within the next week. Hard copies are also available at the township office.
The budget's general fund balances with $1,293,808 in income and expenses.

Comedy Show sells out week early

ST. MARYS – The SGL Warriors Elk County Relay For Life team will be presenting their sixth LOL Stand Up Comedy Show and dinner at the Edgewood Hall in St. Marys on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m.
Co-captain of the SGL Warriors and event planner Bill Babik said tickets for the event sold out earlier in the week.
"This is the first year we are sold out this far ahead of the event," Babik said. "It's going really good and we will continue to host the event."
Babik and co-captain Brian Reid plan to host another comedy event in early March of 2012.

ERHC’s Q Care providing more efficient healthcare services

ST. MARYS – In order to make health care for area residents more efficient, Elk Regional Health Center (ERHC) has developed the Q Care service for non-urgent health care needs that will allow people to be seen for more minor ailments and avoid lengthy waits in the center's emergency department.

Elk hunters bag big bulls in Hunt Zone 7

KARTHAUS – With this year's week-long elk hunting season in full swing, Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) personnel and spectators at the elk check station, located at the Game Commission's maintenance shed along the Quehanna Highway in Karthaus, had the opportunity to examine a pair of impressive bulls shortly after the station opened at 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
The bulls were both harvested in Zone 7, with one having been shot Monday evening and the other early Tuesday morning.

Water testing available for area residents

Officials have secured $150,000 through the Colcom Foundation's grant program, "Marcellus Environmental Fund," for the Headwaters Quality Drinking Water Project.
The initiative reportedly will provide low- to moderate-income families in Jefferson, Elk, Potter, Cameron, Clinton, Centre, Clearfield, and McKean counties with funding to secure chain-of-custody water sample analysis of their private water supplies prior to Marcellus Shale gas well drilling activities.

Hunters harvest 13 elk on opening day

KARTHAUS – The 2011 elk hunt opened on Monday, with hunters harvesting 13 elk - five bulls and eight cows. There were a total of 56 elk licenses awarded this year in a drawing held at the Pennsylvania Game Commission's Harrisburg headquarters on the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 14. Of those 56 licenses, 18 were for bulls, while 38 were for cows.
Chris Rosenberry, supervisor of the deer and elk section for the PGC, indicated that Monday's harvest was typical for the first day of the season.
Last year, a total of eight elk were harvested on the opening day of the hunt.

Flu shot availability expanded throughout county

ST. MARYS - With flu season upon us, many are finding more options exist than ever before when it comes to when and where they can get the vaccine.
Whereas before, flu shot providers were limited essentially to doctors and physicians, now there are a variety of officially sanctioned providers, including pharmacies and nurse- run clinics, to administer the vaccine. The increased availability is the result of a nationwide effort on part of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to increase vaccination rates among the public.
