St. Marys parks have 'ideas worth sharing'

A new project to spark creativity in the community, titled “Ideas Worth Sharing,” has begun at the parks in St. Marys. Started by Park Director Denny Posteraro, the project focuses on the children and adults in the community by keeping them entertained, increasing their knowledge in the arts and maintaining a connection with the passion for learning new things.
“Usually parents sign their kids up for things,” said Posteraro. “We want to kids to go home and ask their parents to do these things because they want to.”

Area fire department holds inaugural event

KERSEY – The first annual Smoke on the Mountain Annual Benefit cookoff was held Friday and Saturday at the Fox Township Fire Department in Kersey.
Joe Kugler, Lieutenant 32 of the Fox Township Fire Department, said the idea is to enjoy some good food and good company. Kugler was one of the main contacts for the event along with Ron Deahl, the chairman of the barbecue committee.

Area auto dealership celebrating 25 years, donating $25,000 to charity by Victoria Stanish

ST. MARYS - In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Stoltz Family Dealerships is planning to give back to the communities it serves by donating $25,000 to local charities.
The automobile sales and service business, which has five locations throughout Elk, Clearfield and Potter counties, is giving away $25,000 to local charities selected by area residents who cast a vote for their favorite charity.

New book features CCC in national forest

A new book on the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) has been published by the Kane Historic Preservation Society.
The 124-page book is filled with photos and accounts of the 16 CCC camps in the only national forest in Pennsylvania.

RDA still waiting for Yoder to sign off on projects

The St. Marys Redevelopment Authority (RDA) is still waiting for developer Bob Yoder to sign off on a number of upcoming projects, according to authority member Warren Stewart.
Stewart addressed members of city council earlier this week regarding the matter.
"We had sent your developer letters on six properties. We haven't heard a response back," Stewart said.

Community Scavenger Hunt under way

CNB Bank, in conjunction with the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce and the Elk County Catholic High School (ECCHS) art department, recently kicked off its Community Scavenger Hunt.
As part of the event, participants must locate 15 wooden canvases designed and painted by ECCHS juniors and seniors, all featuring a firework or patriotic theme. Fifteen area businesses are displaying the canvases.

Corridor safety analysis completed

Officials in the transportation department at North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC] announced the completion of a corridor safety analysis Wednesday with some surprising findings.

School lunch prices set to increase

Breakfast and lunch sales within the St. Marys Area School District (SMASD) increased this year, and the cost of these meals will also increase for the 2011-12 school year, according to Superintendent Ann Kearney.
At a recent school board meeting, Kearney presented information from a report issued by SMASD Food Services Director Jennifer Asti.
"Lunch prices had not been raised for many years and they were increased for next school year by state and federal mandates," Kearney said.

Council approves request for Bavarian Fall Fest

The inaugural Bavarian Fall Fest, held last year, was a resounding success, and although this year's event is still several months away, the Bavarian Fall Fest Committee is already well into the planning stages for the event, slated for Sept. 23, 24 and 25 in downtown St. Marys.

Scholarship program continues to grow

As part of its ongoing scholarship program, the Elk County Community Foundation (ECCF) awarded a total of 83 scholarships to local students this year totaling $77,225.
Of those scholarships, 20 were awarded to seniors from St. Marys Area High School, 19 from Ridgway Area High School, 17 from Elk County Catholic High School, 12 from Johnsonburg Area High School, six from DuBois Area High School, four from Brockway Area High School and two from Kane Area High School.
