Litigation, bid packages topics at meeting

Fox Township will continue with litigation as it relates to the Hogback Road paving project. This case has been in litigation since 2008 with the township incurring significant costs in fighting the case.
On March 25, the supervisors held an executive session with the township solicitor.
Supervisor Mike Keller said it is in the township's best interest to continue fighting the case.
Keller said township officials believe they can win the case.
During their meeting the group reviewed the present status of the case and have discovered options on how to proceed.

Stormwater, solicitation ordinance discussed

The City of St. Marys is awaiting a followup response about its stormwater management ordinance from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) who stated the ordinance was generally sufficient except for two deficiencies.
The deficiencies pertained to the city's definition and square footage measurements of impervious surface which is landscape that cannot absorb rainfall.

Local author publishes novel

Luke Streich, a Ridgway native writing under the pen name Eazra Shrantz, recently completed a novel titled "Bleeding Shadows" which has been available online since April 5.
Streich, a graduate of Ridgway Area High School, began writing "stories and poetry for fun in the second grade," and has since went on to author several short stories prior to "Bleeding Shadows," his first full-length novel.

Chamber presents annual awards

A large crowd gathered Saturday evening for the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce's Annual Dinner in which two local businesses and one organization were honored for their achievements throughout the past year.
The 2014 recipients were GKN with the Business Achievement Award, the Keystone Elk Country Alliance (KECA) with the Community Achievement Award, and the St. Marys Rotary Club with the Community Spirit Award.
The Highlands, formerly the St. Marys Country Club, hosted the Hollywood-themed event "A Night with the Stars."

Byrnedale residence destroyed in fire

BYRNEDALE – Emergency responders battled a house fire late Friday night and into the early morning hours of Saturday at a house just off Log Cabin Lane in the area of 19850 Bennetts Valley Highway in Byrnedale.
Elk Company 3 (Fox Township) and Elk Company 5 (Jay Township) were dispatched to the fire at 11:18 p.m. along with Bennetts Valley Ambulance.

Elk Company 3 (Fox Township) and Elk Company 5 (Jay Township) were dispatched to the fire at 11:18 p.m. along with Bennetts Valley Ambulance.
Elk Company 1 (Crystal Fire Department) and Elk Company 4 (Ridgway Fire Department) responded shortly after 11:50 p.m.

Dollinger earns second trip to All-State Festival

For the second consecutive year Andrea Dollinger, a junior trombone player at St. Marys Area High School, participated in the All-State Wind Ensemble during the 2014 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) annual conference held in Hershey.
"Only kids that have exceptional talent make it to the All-State Festival," said Christopher Gankosky, SMAHS band director.
Dollinger began this year's journey to Hershey by qualifying for a series of PMEA festivals including district, regional and all-state band performances.

ECCHS AP Chemistry students take part in symposium

After her AP Chemistry students began working on research projects last fall, Elk County Catholic High School AP Chemistry instructor Dr. Shawn Millinder realized that their topics would make great poster titles. She decided to hold a symposium and invited a number of individuals from area businesses and organizations who might be interested, and gave the students the option of presenting their research or having a poster on display.

Jay Twp. Fire Department receives donation

BYRNEDALE – Members of the Jay Township Fire Department on Friday morning accepted a donation from St. Marys Pharmacy & SMP Home Medical.
The battery donation is for the department's new UTV, an off-road utility task vehicle.

Stephanic in court on homicide charges

RIDGWAY – Elk County President Judge Richard Masson listened to several omnibus pretrial motions on Thursday during a hearing for Michael J. Stephanic Jr., 45, of St. Marys, who is currently incarcerated in the Elk County Prison on charges he allegedly shot and killed June Talmadge, 48, during a Sept. 3 incident in the parking lot of Eastern Sintered Metals.
