During a recent presentation held at St. Marys Area High School geared toward informing parents about current drug trends, Heidi Aikens, Prevention Supervisor for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, Inc., discussed some of the many signs of drug use and abuse.
During Wednesday evening's Fox Township Supervisors meeting, Supervisor Dave Mattiuz updated the board on additional changes made to the draft to the township's proposed saving plan ordinance.
"Something caused some concern about the report on the landfill's income," Mattiuz said.
He noted the income at Veolia Landfill, located in Fox Township, has not increased as anticipated. Mattiuz explained that if this trend continues the township will come out $200,000 below budget.
St. Marys Catholic Middle School (SMCMS) students recently participated in a contest, and in doing so, also raised money to help fight hunger locally.
Heidi Aikens, prevention supervisor for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, Inc., recently held a presentation for parents at St. Marys Area High School. Aikens focused a portion of her presentation on prescription medication safety, offering a variety of tips for individuals who may have potentially dangerous prescription medications in their homes.
Aikens advised attendees to first contact their doctor or pharmacist to find out if a prescription that they or a family member has been prescribed is considered to be dangerous.
Fifth graders from the St. Marys Area School District recently visited the St. Marys Area Middle School to take part in an orientation program to prepare them for their transition to the middle school in the fall. Part of that orientation program included a trip to the school's outdoor classroom.
Pam Patterson, the Biology 2 teacher at the St. Marys Area High School, supervised the program at the outdoor classroom and was assisted by several ninth graders from the high school.
Elk County Waterways Conservation Officer Thomas McMann presented the annual report from the PA Fish and Boat Commission for District 5046 during a recent community affairs meeting at the East Branch Clarion River Lake.
The report cites various statistics, activities and accomplishments within the district and covers activities conducted by the assigned Waterways Conservation Officer (WCO).
"Elk County is a remote and diversified district," McMann said. "Being the only Waterways Conservation Officer in the county, I have many people to thank for their help."
Elk County commissioners held off on any announcements pertaining to the acquisition of the Industrial Technical Education Center [ITEC] facility, but said Tuesday morning that a formal announcement will be made at their next board meeting Wednesday, May 18 at 10 a.m.
The facility will be used as the county's new 911 Center and the acquisition and relocation of equipment comes without any increases whatsoever to the county's taxpayers.
According to an affidavit of probable cause released by District Judge Donald Wilhelm on Tuesday afternoon, two St. Marys Area High School students were charged with third-degree misdemeanors in relation to an incident that took place at Elk County Catholic High School on the morning of April 28.
For the second year in a row, Northwest Savings Bank has been honored by J.D. Power and Associates. The bank was recently informed that it has repeated as holding the highest ranking in customer satisfaction for retail banking in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The rankings were recently released by J.D. Power and Associates in the company's 2011 Retail Banking Customer Satisfaction Survey.
The Elk County Prison Board continued a recent trend Tuesday morning by continuing to update existing policies used at the Elk County Prison.
"We have additional policies that have been updated since our last meeting that need to be approved as well," said Elk County Prison Warden Gregory J. Gebauer.
The updated policies pertain to staffing from an administrative standpoint; security issues, including commitment/recommitment, use of force (taser use) and instruments of restraint; and treatment involving healthcare and suicide prevention, screening and response.
