Skrzypek withdraws from district justice nomination

According to the Elk County Bureau of Elections and Voter Registration, Stephen P. Skrzypek of Kersey has withdrawn from the race for Magisterial District Justice 59-3-03. Skrzypek withdrew his candidacy on July 5, according to the elections bureau.
In the primary election held May 17, Skrzypek won the Democratic nomination and was set to face Republican primary ballot winner Mark S. Jacob of St. Marys in the Nov. 8 general election. Both candidates cross-filed on the ballots.

Supervisors contemplate subcontract work

At Wednesday's regular meeting, Fox Township Supervisor Dave Mattiuz introduced a motion that any work being subcontracted within the township should be required to come before the board for permission. He added this would exclude any work having to be completed in an emergency situation.
Supervisor chairman Mike Keller noted that this would be very restrictive and that the proposal should include a specific dollar amount of work, adding any work under $500 should be exempt.
Roadmaster and supervisor Randy Gradizzi said he disagrees with the proposed motion.

Supervisors delay implementation of township savings plan

KERSEY - The Fox Township Supervisors were divided as far as discussion went on a draft ordinance for a township savings plan. During their regular meeting held Wednesday evening, the board voted to revisit the savings plan closer to budget time in the fall.
Supervisor Dave Mattiuz undertook the task of overseeing the creation of the savings plan, and following several changes to the document said he was happy with the final product on Wednesday.

Inner Park Day held at Memorial Park

Around 200 area youth between the ages of five and 14 participated in Inner Park Day at Memorial Park on Wednesday. According to Memorial Park recreation director Denny Posteraro, the turnout was a new record for the event, which has been held off and on since the 1970s.
Posteraro noted that attendance typically averages around 125, and the previous largest group record was close to 170.
"You're always impressed when the numbers go up, and we know that there are a lot of other things going on," Posteraro said.

Commissioners approve agreement with West Penn

The Elk County Board of Commissioners held their regular meeting yesterday morning to approve a variety of topics.
First on the agenda, the commissioners approved the use of the courthouse lawn on July 15 and 22 by the Elk County Council of the Arts for their Summer Concert Series.
The commissioners voted to approve a license agreement made effective as of June 30, 2010, by and between West Penn Power Company and Elk County.
Commissioner June H. Sorg noted the agreement is for an outdoor classroom.

IRS to auction off Shady Point Restaurant in Kane

The federal Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will try to recover about $93,000 by auctioning off the vacant Shady Point Restaurant at 623 N. Fraley St. in Kane.
The public auction is set for Wednesday, July 27 at 11:30 a.m. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. The minimum bid to be accepted is $70,000, according to a legal notice announcing the auction.
Prospective bidders are invited to "drive by" the closed restaurant building on North Fraley Street (Route 6) in Kane. Interior inspections are not available at this time, but may be offered in the future, according to a legal notice.

St. Marys celebrates 4th of July

A sizable crowd gathered on the grounds of the St. Marys Golf Club on Saturday as they awaited the annual firework display. The ideal summer weather made for a clear night to view the fireworks from throughout the city. The display is part of the annual St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce Independence Day Celebration.

Fox Twp. celebrates 4th of July

A great crowd was on hand for the 4th of July celebration in Fox Township held on Sunday, July 3. There were many activities and all types of entertainment. Area youngsters entertained the crowd prior to the fireworks on Sunday evening; “Uncle Sam” could be seen making his way around the Fox Township Community Park interacting with revelers; and train rides proved popular with individuals of all ages who turned out to join in the celebration.

'Freedom Rally' receives strong turnout

RIDGWAY - The Elk County Tea Party hosted its Freedom Rally yesterday morning to a large audience on the steps of the Elk County Courthouse.
Among the many guest speakers were U.S. Representative Glenn 'GT' Thompson (PA-5) and State Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk).
