St. Marys Area High School continues to offer its students a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between school and career preparation.
As part of services offered by the SMAHS Technical Preparation Career Center, students utilize cooperative education through the Co-op School-to-Career program.
Recently, both students and employers were recognized for the efforts during the schoolâ€™s annual School-To-Work banquet.
Students in the program work between 20-40 hours per week at local businesses.
Earlier this week, members of St. Marys City Council voted to authorize members of the city's staff to conduct a study looking into the possibility of using brine instead of limestone for anti-skid control during the winter months. The idea was initially proposed by city councilman Bob Roberts, who immediately clarified for council members and attendees what he meant by brine.
Only weeks removed from a March 23 tornado that destroyed 30 homes in western Pennsylvania, Michael A. McAllister, director of Elk County's emergency management office, reminded local residents that a natural disaster can occur anywhere.
"One of the best things that I can advise people is that parents should talk to their kids about what to do during a tornado," McAllister said. "Every spring, we do a statewide weather exercise which is usually based on flooding and tornadoes.
The world's largest and fastest-growing nonprofit economic education program, Junior Achievement (JA) of Elk and Cameron counties is seeking volunteers from throughout the area to serve on the organization's Board of Directors or as classroom volunteers.
JA provides students in grades K-12 with programs that are age-appropriate. Elementary students learn about their roles as individuals, workers and consumers while middle and high school students learn about key economic, ethical and workforce issues that they will face as working members of society.
Members of city council approved a resolution, three bids, and a request from the In-Town Gardeners during their meeting on Monday evening.
Council members first addressed Resolution 11-7 regarding an allocation of liquid fuel funds from the county.
City Manager Dave Greene explained that the Elk County Commissioners recently approved a disbursement of liquid fuel funds to the city in the amount of $13,000.
"The city will use the liquid fuel funding to reimburse the General Fund for the purchase of 1B limestone," Greene said.
This week marks Community Banking Week at the city's three Northwest Savings Bank locations. The event runs from April 4 through 8 and features unique activities and giveaways at each of the offices.
During Monday evening's St. Marys City Council meeting, City Councilman Dick Dornisch indicated that there needs to be a clearer interpretation of the Home Rule Charter regarding the length of time a former council member must sit out before once again seeking election to the board. He specifically called into question candidate Tom Farley's ability to be listed on the primary ballot, since Farley had served two consecutive terms and has only sat out since his last term ended at the end of 2009.
The Footlighters of Elk County explore the family road trip and the memories of youth in their latest production, "Leaving Iowa," which will be performed April 7, 8 and 9 at the Diamond View Restaurant in St. Marys.
The St. Marys Area Ambulance Service's annual membership drive is under way and will continue throughout the month of April. Funds raised by the drive benefit the association and are used for the upkeep and purchase of new equipment.
According to Robert "Bert" Sorg, manager, the Ambulance Service currently has around 3,000 members, though he noted that the number has steadily declined over the years.
"We need people to take an interest and join the Ambulance Association," Sorg said.
The St. Marys Public Library recently received a much-needed grant in the amount of $1,100 from the Elk County Community Foundation (ECCF). The grant will be utilized to fund the library's popular Summer Reading Program.
