Donachy found guilty of murder

Lawrence Earl Donachy, 36, of St. Marys has been found guilty of second degree murder in the April 5-6, 1999 homicide of Irene Challingsworth, a 56-year-old St. Marys beautician.
A 12-member Butler County jury concluded their deliberations Thursday morning at approximately 10:20 a.m. when Elk County Court of Common Pleas President Judge Richard Masson announced the a verdict had been reached inside the Elk County Courthouse.

Jury continues deliberations in Donachy trial

The 12-member jury in the Lawrence Earl Donachy homicide trial continued their deliberations for eight hours on Wednesday and reported no verdict as the trial recessed for the day at 5 p.m.
Deliberations will continue Thursday morning at 9 a.m. at the Elk County Courthouse as President Judge Richard Masson presides over the hearing.

Budget revised for county housing program

Elk County Commissioners on Tuesday approved a budget revision for the Elk County Homeless Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program and Narrative.
"This is a follow-up revision from one that we did roughly 60 days ago," said Richard Gavazzi, a housing and program specialist for the county's planning department. "As we're nearing the end of the grant program, budget revisions need to be made to allocate the final program dollars through each specific category."

Closing remarks presented in Donachy trial; jury continues to deliberate verdict

A 12-member jury did not reach a verdict on Tuesday following nearly 5.5 hours of deliberation in the homicide trial of Lawrence Earl Donachy, 36, of St. Marys. Deliberations will continue this morning beginning at 9 a.m., where the jury will decide the fate of Donachy, who is charged with one count each of criminal homicide, rape, burglary, aggravated assault, criminal attempt at arson and unlawful restraint in the April 5-6, 1999 rape and murder of Irene Challingsworth, a 57-year-old St. Marys beautician.

County finds relief from inmate medical bills

Elk County officials will soon catch a break in their budget, as commissioners yesterday discussed Act 22, an initiative that went into effect July 1, which provides help with payments of inmate medical health care bills for eligible inmates.

Testimony concludes in Donachy trial

As the second week of the trial of Lawrence Earl Donachy commenced Monday morning, testimony concluded and jurors began the day with a field trip to St. Marys, where they were shown various sites of interest pertaining to the trial. Donachy, 36, is accused of the April 5-6, 1999 rape and murder of 56-year-old St. Marys beautician Irene Challingsworth at her home on 213 Walnut St.

Area residents unhappy with proposed parking changes

At Monday evening's City Council meeting, approximately 11 area residents, including some employees and owners of downtown businesses, appeared before council to express their displeasure with proposed parking changes for the city.

First week of Donachy murder trial closes

RIDGWAY - In the fifth day of testimony in the trial of Lawrence Earl Donachy on Friday, the defense called upon witnesses that included a sexual assault forensic examiner, former City of St. Marys Police officers and pedestrians who had seen lights on in Irene Challingsworth's residence the night of the murder. Donachy, 36, of St. Marys, is accused of the April 5-6, 1999 rape and murder of Challingsworth. The trial is being held at the Elk County Courthouse in Ridgway before a jury from Butler County and is presided over by President Judge Richard Masson.
