McEntire touts new carving bar at seminar

RIDGWAY - Jack McEntire of Selah, Wash. spoke to fellow chainsaw carvers Wednesday morning touting the new Sioux carving bar and the need for an arts television channel as part of the daily seminars offered at Appalachian Arts Studio in Ridgway.
Joining McEntire in his presentation was Dave Tremko of Chugiak, Alaska.
The seminars are being offered in conjunction with the 12th annual Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous.

County donates kettle to Sacred Heart

The Elk County Commissioners donated a 20-gallon soup kettle valued at $2,000 to The Sacred Heart Parish's Social Committee Wednesday afternoon. Co-chairpersons Helene Burdick and Linda Brunner were at the Courthouse Annex Building to receive the kettle.
“I can't believe we are getting this,” Brunner said.
The soup kettle was being stored in the Elk County Prison for a number of years and at one time was put up for bid.

Mini Relay for Life event raises over $5,000

In only its second year, the South St. Marys Street Elementary Mini Relay for Life succeeded in raising nearly $5,600 for the American Cancer Society.
Approximately 100 students participated in this year's mini relay, held in the school's gymnasium on Friday, Feb. 11.

Council awards bid for resurfacing project

During their meeting on Monday evening, members of city council voted to approve awarding the bid for resurfacing paved roads throughout the city later this year to HRI Inc. of State College in the amount of $911,388.52.

Bue talks photography

RIDGWAY – Cima Bue, a photographer turned chainsaw carver from Callicoon Center, N.Y., gave a unique presentation Tuesday morning at Appalachian Arts Studio in front of Rendezvous carvers and community members.
Bue, who spent well over 15 years as a photographer, only recently turned his attention to chainsaw carving.

Authority members plan for spring tire collection

Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner indicated to authority members that the annual free tire recycling collections will be held the last week of April in conjunction with the Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania.

City Council opposes area code change

February 21, 2011

At the request of city councilman Bob Roberts, members of city council approved issuing a resolution expressing their opposition to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission's plan to change the telephone area code in the area from 814 to 582.
"I wonder if it wouldn't be well for the City of St. Marys to oppose that change," Roberts said. "Many municipalities around us are doing that, in fact, and I'd like to see a resolution."

SMAHS principals present reports

St. Marys Area School District principals presented updates about their schools during a recent school board workshop.
South St. Marys Street Elementary Principal Bob Grumley presented information about the school's Accelerated Reader program, with 488 out of 618 students reaching their goals. Each student is given an individual assessment at the beginning of the school year in determining what their Accelerated Reader goal is. Of those students, 85 percent are comprehending what they are reading, with the goal of 90 percent comprehension for next year.

Popular carver discusses range of topics

Bob King, a member of the ECHO-USA carving team and renowned carver throughout the United States and international circuit, gave a presentation Monday morning at Appalachian Arts Studio in Ridgway.
King's focal point was on the wide variety of carvers who comprise the art form, from competitive carving to main event carving to entertainment and exhibition.
