The annual Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament, featuring the girls' and boys' varsity basketball squads from St. Marys Area High School, Elk County Catholic High School, Johnsonburg Area High School and Ridgway Area High School, kicks off this afternoon at the SMAHS gymnasium, and will once again feature a variety of fundraisers for the Coaches vs. Cancer program.
According to Roben Daghir, volunteer survivor for outreach and awareness, there will once again be a Coaches vs. Cancer table located in the foyer near the main entrance to the gymnasium.
This year 221 children from Cameron, Elk, McKean, and Potter counties received gifts and clothing as part of the 2011 Pat Work Memorial Christmas Project.
Now in its third year, the project is an endeavor of Dickinson Center, Inc. (DCI) and named in memory of Patricia "Pat" Work, a therapist with the organization for several years prior to her death in 2003.
"Pat worked with children and always made an extra effort at Christmas to make sure they had gifts, etc.," said Heidi Thomas, chief fiscal officer/chief operations officer for Dickinson.
A news release recently issued by the Ridgway-based state police cautions the public of to be aware of a new mail fraud scam which can steal both their money and their identity.
RIDGWAY â€“ County commissioners on Tuesday approved an $11.3 million spending plan that features no new taxes highlighted with a 3-percent wage increase for bargaining and non-bargaining county employees.
"The 2012 budget was presented to the public at our meeting earlier in the month," said Elk County Commissioner Daniel R. Freeburg. "We went into the public participation and review process, it's been on display online as well as physically in our office, and I don't believe we've had any comments on it."
With New Year's Eve nearly here, police will be out in force and on the lookout for suspected drunk drivers. Those who get behind the wheel after having imbibed one too many holiday spirits should know that under Pennsylvania's Implied Consent Law, they have already agreed to submit to a law enforcement-administered sobriety test if they are pulled over, something many people may not know.
During the citizens' comments portion of the St. Marys City Council meeting last Monday evening, resident Mike Brock asked council members to request that the planning commission again review the city's oil and natural gas drilling ordinance, which was recently updated to address potential Marcellus Shale gas drilling.
With a winter maintenance budget of $1.3 million and $2 million for Elk and McKean counties, respectively, Greg Sayers, PennDOT (Pa. Department of Transportation) county maintenance manager for the two counties, said he is prepared to battle Jack Frost nipping at the roads and bracing himself and his team for what he knows firsthand to be an often- unpredictable season.

Christmas can be a particularly special time for children, and they often make memories that they carry with them throughout the rest of their lives. Several current and former residents of Elk County recently shared with The Daily Press some of their fondest Christmas memories from their childhood.
Elk County Conservation District Manager Steve Putt reported on his recent visit to the Silver Creek site after the Hunt Marcellus Operating Company spilled a large amount of bentonite into the stream, quickly making its way into a reservoir controlled by the Johnsonburg Municipal Authority.
Bentonite is a form of impure clay that easily absorbs water and is used to facilitate gas drilling.

Though only an eighth grader at the St. Marys Area Middle School, Kersey resident Nicole Holland is currently using her abilities to make a big difference in the lives of patients at the Hahne Regional Cancer Center, a division of DuBois Regional Medical Center located in DuBois.
Holland, through her role as reigning Elk County Fair junior queen, recently undertook efforts to raise money to assemble "Hahne hope bags" for cancer patients.
