ST. MARYS - The Crossroads Partial Hospitalization Program hosted an open house on Thursday afternoon where community members were invited to tour the program's new facility, which opened in July inside Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys.
Students at Elk County Catholic High School (ECCHS) recently created ECHO - an acronym for "Elk Catholic Helping Others" - as an umbrella title for all of the service projects that school members participate in throughout the year.
Fr. Ross Miceli, campus minister at ECCHS, explained that the creation of ECHO was deemed necessary because it served as a way to explain that Elk Catholic does a great deal more service outreach than that which falls into the category of campus ministry.
Elk County District Attorney Bradley J. Kraus responded this week to requests by The Daily Press for comment on his decision not to further investigate the death of an area woman whose family members, along with area attorney Shawn McMahon, claim died as a result of prescription drug-related complications.
Some say no good deed goes unnoticed, and this recently proved to be true for St. Marys Municipal Airport Manager Alan McPherson.
Almost a year ago, in early December 2010, McPherson received a call from the Pennsylvania State Police regarding a National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter that was stranded in Emporium after running low on fuel during a snow storm. The helicopter had been on its way from Port Allegany back to Fort Indiantown Gap.
"They ran low on fuel and had to make an emergency landing in the tennis courts down at the school in Emporium," McPherson said.
This year's Elk County Job Fair will provide the area's job seekers an opportunity to meet with an array of employers representing the transportation, telecommunications, manufacturing, health care and service industries.
The Elk County Historical Society [ECHS] will be hosting its annual Christmas Exhibit/Open House at the Center House Museum at 109 Center Street in Ridgway this Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.
This year's special exhibit focuses on He-Man & the Masters of the Universe memorabilia dating as far back as 1982 and Cabbage Patch dolls, one as old as 30 years and in excellent condition.
Society director Mary Kalinowski began hosting the Christmas Exhibit when she began working for the historical society in 2007.
Work is progressing on the Sacred Heart Parish Center renovation project, with the nearly $2 million project slated to be completed at the end of summer 2012.
Located on Center Street in St. Marys, the parish center was the former Sacred Heart Elementary School, which closed following the merger of three local Catholic elementary schools.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of people diagnosed with diabetes has risen dramatically across the nation, increasing from 1.5 million in 1958 to 18.8 million in 2010. From 1980 to 2009, the percentage of people diagnosed with diabetes in the United States increased in all age groups. Many factors have been attributed to this rise, including an increasingly sedentary lifestyle among Americans.
The Ridgway-Elk County Chamber of Commerce will be hosting their sixth annual Holiday Cheer Tour this Friday from 5-9 p.m. providing the perfect opportunity for patrons to visit downtown retailers while enjoying a festive sampling of holiday spirits and hors d'oeuvres.
Mary Kucenski, Ridgway-Elk County Chamber of Commerce administrative assistant is expecting a strong turnout. This year's tour has expanded from years past and will extend as far as the West End Grocery along Oak Street to Today's Carpet & Furniture along North Broad Street.
A moment of silence was observed for former St. Marys Mayor Jim Auman at the beginning of the most recent City Council meeting.
Councilman Dick Dornisch also paid tribute to Auman, who died earlier this month.
"He was memorable in many different ways as a St. Marys citizen. In a way it was a fall of giants," Dornisch said.
He recalled meeting with Auman in 1962 about the possibility of Auman running for mayor.
