U.S. Representative Glenn Thompson (PA-5) visited The Winery at Wilcox along Mefferts Run Road in Wilcox yesterday afternoon.
Winery owners Mike and Carol Williams and their son Jamie welcomed Thompson upon arrival and walked him through a 45-minute tour of the facilities.
When the winery first opened its doors in the summer of 1994, it was the smallest in Pennsylvania and had an inventory of 1,100 gallons in eight varieties. Today the winery has a capacity of almost 60,000 gallons, with over 31 selections for the 2009-2010 vintage, and is one of the state's five largest wineries.
ST. MARYS - A senior prank gone awry was reportedly the reason for a lockdown Thursday morning that affected schools in the Elk County Catholic School System and the St. Marys Area School District.
Sixteen residents, business owners and local organizations were recognized for their efforts in sustaining tourism and development during the Pennsylvania Wilds Planning Team's annual briefing, held Thursday at the Diamond View Restaurant and Lounge in St. Marys.
BENEZETTE â€“Â Bob Rusiewski, ARC/EDA Project Director for North Central, was presented a plaque by Rawley Cogan, president and CEO of the Keystone Elk Country Alliance, on Wednesday morning at the Elk Country Visitor Center. The plaque honored Rusiewski and the Appalachian Region Commission (ARC) as a Keystone Guardian Partner for contributions they made to both the Keystone Elk Country Alliance and Elk Country Visitor Center.
Cogan explained that the ARC is federally funded, with the funds being disbursed through the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission.
RIDGWAY - Officials Wednesday afternoon announced updated plans for the second annual North Central Communities Conference.
Matt Marusiak, community development coordinator for the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC], revealed two keynote speakers: Dan Meuser, the acting secretary of the Pa. Department of Revenue, and U.S. Representative Glenn "GT" Thompson (R-PA-5).
The conference is scheduled for May 18 at Penn State DuBois.
BENEZETTE â€“Â Benezette Township was recently selected to receive a $1,301,000 Water and Environment Program (WEP) loan and a $1,114,000 WEP Grant from USDA Rural Development to construct a wastewater collection and treatment system. Benezette Township Supervisors Jim McCluskey, Bob Howard, and Mark Moorehead gathered along with area officials at the Benezette Township building in Benezette on Wednesday morning for the announcement, which was made by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Director Robert Schoenfeldt.
North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC] officials voted Wednesday morning to proceed with the sale of the Industrial Technical Education Center [ITEC] facility along Montmorenci Road in Ridgway to Elk County for $1.5 million.
Governor Tom Corbett's budget proposal for the fiscal year 2011-2012 proposes significant changes to the state's community and economic development delivery system, and officials at the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC] are feeling the squeeze.
Representatives from several area state and local parks presented updates on their facilities and programs on Wednesday morning during the East Branch Clarion River Lake's spring public meeting.
Topics focused on activities and issues which have occurred since the lake's fall 2010 meeting. In addition, a dam safety initiative currently being undertaken at the lake followed the partnership reports.
Jeanne Wambaugh of Elk State Forest said the park has a new ranger, Tillman Smith, as well as a new oil and gas forester who arrived in October.
The Elk County Community Recycling Center is rapidly approaching the half-ton mark for No. 5 plastics.
"We have about another dozen boxes of No. 5 plastic to ship," said Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordiantor Bekki Titchner during Tuesday night's Solid Waste Authority meeting. "We have a whole mountain to take to the post office again.
"We are approaching 1,000 pounds of the stuff. It's pretty amazing."
