Infrastructure projects approved by board

Several projects for the St. Marys Area School District were approved by the board of school directors on Monday evening. The 17 projects are being funded with proceeds from the new $9.995 million bond the district approved in March. The cost of all the projects total $5.65 million.

Inebriated man allegedly pulls knife at party

A Ridgway man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly brandished a pocketknife at a May birthday party and reportedly made terroristic threats.
Benjamin E. Meyer, 34, of 229 W. Main St., Ridgway, was charged Monday, June 8 with making terroristic threats and criminal mischief-damage property following an incident May 21 in St. Marys at a birthday party along East Eschbach Road.
According to reports, St. Marys City Police Patrolman Jason A. Miller was dispatched to a dispute May 21 at approximately 8:59 p.m. in the 1200 block of East Eschbach Road in St. Marys.

Library holding Worldwide Knit in Public Day event

The St. Marys Public Library will be holding an event on Saturday, June 13 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in conjunction with Worldwide Knit in Public Day. Community members are encouraged to go to the library during that time to either knit or crochet purple hats for newborns and premies. All of the hats will be donated to the maternity ward at Penn Highlands Elk.
St. Marys Public Library director Leslie Swope explained that Worldwide Knit in Public Day is a way to show people that knitting – and crocheting – can be fun for individuals of all ages.

Elk County holds another successful Relay for Life

KERSEY – Overcast conditions early Saturday morning gave way to sunshine and warm weather, providing ideal conditions for this year’s Relay for Life of Elk County which was held at Fox Township Community Park from 9 a.m. on Saturday until 3 a.m. Sunday. The theme of this year’s event was Mardi Gras – A Celebration of Life.
While walkers began making their way on the pathways at the park at 9 a.m., the event’s opening ceremony did not take place until 11 a.m. At that time, Bill Babik, event chairman, took to the stage to welcome all those who were participating in this year’s Relay for Life.

Assalone: Never lose hope

KERSEY ­– Nate Assalone was the featured speaker at this year’s Relay for Life of Elk County, and he briefly took to the stage at Fox Township Community Park on Saturday evening to share the story of how he defied the odds to become a 13-year cancer survivor.
When Assalone, 36, stepped up to the microphone, he joked that he had only agreed to speak because he had been told there were supposed to be funnel cakes at the event.
"There are no funnel cakes, just so you know," he said to the crowd gathered around the stage. "I'm very disappointed."

Seniors impart words of encouragement to classmates

St. Marys Area High School Class of 2015 valedictorian Samantha Candalor and salutatorian Angela Frey imparted wise words to the fellow graduates in their speeches during the school's annual commencement program.
Salutatorian and class vice-president Angela Frey recollected class memories and looked to the future as she addressed her classmates, family, friends, and faculty.

Fire departments benefit from new fund

On Friday evening, Straub Brewery celebrated the efforts and dedication of the eight Elk County volunteer fire departments during their summer kickoff party.
Each department will receive a one-time donation from the newly-created Elk County Firefighters Fund established by Straub Brewery, which has raised $34,781.15.
The catalyst behind establishing the fund to support local fire departments followed a Feb. 27 blaze which destroyed the brewery's maintenance building.

Downtown road damaged resulting in blocked traffic lane

The left lane of North St. Marys Street along the Diamond in downtown St. Marys was blocked off Friday due to a deteriorated portion of the road which was washed away during recent rainfalls. PennDOT crews were on scene Friday evening to repair the road. The southbound left lane was re-opened at 9:25 p.m.

Community pool open for summer

The St. Marys Community Pool officially opened for the summer on Friday afternoon. The pool's regular summer hours of operation will be open from 1-8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 12-5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
