May 6th
Wm. James (Jim) Zwald, 73, of 143 Larch Rd., St. Marys, died Saturday, May 5, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
He was born March 19, 1939 in Olean, N.Y., son of the late Clarence and Nina Dandois Zwald. He was a resident of St. Marys since 1960.
On June 18, 1960, in the Sacred Heart Church, he married Sandra B. Salter, who survives.
Mae Kathleen (Sexton) Assalone, 92, of Horseshoe Drive, Penfield, died May 5, 2012 at home following a short illness.
She was born Jan. 18, 1920 in Penfield, daughter of the late Frank R. and Albertine Estella (Mix) Sexton.
On Feb. 3, 1940 she married Patsy James Assalone; he preceded her in death in January 1989.
She lived all her life in Penfield at the same address and graduated from Huston Township High School on May 28, 1937. She was formerly a member of Penfield United Methodist, and was currently attending St. Peter's United Church of Christ.

Mabel M. Gillen-Ives, 56, of Tyler Road, Penfield, died Thursday, May 3, 2012 at home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Nov. 18, 1955 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Paul J. and Mary "Tootie" (McClain) Gillen.
A homemaker, she lived in St. Marys until coming to Penfield in 1979. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church of Force, enjoyed car shows, was an avid Steelers fan, and was a loving mother and fun-loving aunt to many.
Lawrence A. Lyons, 74, of 601 Hall Ave., St. Marys, died unexpectedly at his residence on Friday, May 4, 2012.
He was born April 22, 1938 in St. Marys, son of the late Charles and Bertha Eckert Lyons.
On Aug. 1, 1959, he married Janet J. Murvine Crotzer. She preceded him in death on Sept. 19, 2005.
Frank E. Rollick, 93, of 215 Grandview Rd., St. Marys, died Friday, May 4, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 26, 1919 in Rathbun, son of the late John and Mary Eskra Rollick. On May 11, 1946, in the Sacred Heart Church, he married Hazel I. Yonker. She preceded him in death on Jan. 7, 1997.
May 3rd
Jack R. Crawford, 91, of Penfield, died Thursday, May 3, 2012.
He was born Sept. 19, 1920, in Penfield, son of the late Albert and Effie Colwell Crawford. In October 1953, he married Charlene Irvin, who preceded him death on Sept. 13, 1970.
Jack was a lifelong Penfield resident and was Protestant by faith. He was a 1932 graduate of Penfield High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during WW II from June 1942 until Oct. 1945 in the 79th Infantry Recon Division.
Shirley (Ross) Gerg, 84, a resident of Pinecrest Manor and formerly of 121 Parkway Rd., St. Marys, died Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at Pinecrest Manor after a lengthy illness.
She was born Dec. 29, 1927 in Hicks Run, daughter of the late Patrick and Mildred Ford Ross.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1946. She served as the cafeteria manager at the Elk County Catholic High School from 1975 to 2001 and had been a co-owner of the Olympic Bar and Restaurant in St. Marys.
May 2nd
Shirley Mae Nedza-McNulty, 63, of DuBois, died suddenly on Monday, April 30, 2012 at DRMC.
She was born May 2, 1948 in DuBois, daughter of Catherine (Narvey) Nedza and the late George Nedza.
She worked as a registered nurse for over 40 years and was one of the first paramedics in the area. Most recently, she served as funeral home supervisor for the Ubel Funeral Home in Johnsonburg, where she worked with her nephew Joseph M. Nedza since 2005, along with assisting her family at the Ralph M. Geer Funeral Home in Penfield and The Leo Nedza Funeral Homes of DuBois and Sykesville.
April 30th
Hollaus R. "Hollie" Smith, 79, of Willow Street, Johnsonburg, died Monday, April 30, 2012 at Pinecrest Manor after a brief illness.
He was born on Sept. 19, 1932 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Hollaus W. and Jennie (Wheeler) Smith.
He married Jane L. (Steudler) on Jan. 7, 1952 in Johnsonburg; she survives.
