Dorothy A. Meyer, 92, a resident of Pinecrest Manor and formerly of Elk Towers, died unexpectedly Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, at Pinecrest Manor.
She was born Aug. 27, 1922 in Akron, Ohio, daughter of the late Leo and Veronica Smithbauer Frey.
On Sept. 4, 1943 in the St. Maryâ€™s Church, she married Leo G. Meyer, who preceded her in death on Oct. 6, 1984.
Elizabeth (Betty) J. Roth, 92, of Bucktail Road, St. Marys, died in Newburyport, Mass. on Aug. 18, 2014 after a brief illness.
She was born in St. Marys on June 22, 1922, daughter of the late Norbert Wittman and Dolores Distler Wittman. On Oct. 22, 1945, she married John J. Roth, who preceded her in death in 2002.
Lynda M. Pontzer, 67, of 500 Spruce St., St. Marys, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014 at Penn Highlands Elk.
She was born Jan. 26, 1947, a daughter of the late Edward and Orma Nicklas Pontzer.
Lynda graduated from ECCHS and received her bachelor's degree from Mercyhurst University. She then received two master's degrees from the University of Arizona, one in art history and another in English. In her early years, she taught in Denmark, Scotland and Iran. She often substituted in our local schools, and greatly enjoyed teaching children to paint.
Paul J. Nicklas, 82, of 709 Evergreen Rd., St. Marys, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014 at Pinecrest Manor following a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 20, 1931, a son of the late Jerome and Dorothy Simbeck Nicklas.
On July 2, 1955 in St. Leo's Church, he married Patricia Himes Nicklas, who survives.Â
Gail J. Gerg, 79, of 509 West Main St., Ridgway, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014 at Penn Highlands Elk.
He was born Feb. 15, 1935 in St. Marys, son of the late Harry and Margaret Cunningham Gerg.
He married Roselyn Schilk, she survives him.
He was a commercial electrician by trade, and he served in the U.S. Marine Corp. He was also a member of the Ridgway Legion and Elks.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Michael and Daniel Gerg; step-children Timothy, Christine, Stephanie, Mary and Charles; and several grandsons, granddaughters and many great-grandchildren.
Edward Pretti, 73, of Johnstown, formerly of Clearfield, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2014.
Born Sept. 10, 1940, in Force, he was the son of the late Tullio and Fiore (Fedrizzi) Pretti.
He graduated from Huston Township High School and Williamsport Technological Institute. Edward served in the U.S. Army and Reserves. He was a retired machinist, working for DuPont and Berg Electronics. After retirement, he drove cars for Thomas GMC and Honda.
Nellie L. Brehm, 85, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home, St. Marys, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born Sept. 2, 1929, a daughter of the late Carl and Doris Edner Chittister.
She was married to the late James A. Brehm, who preceded her in death.
Nellie was a graduate of Kane High School and enjoyed crossword puzzles.
Together with her husband, they owned and operated Brehm's Family Restaurant in Emporium.Â
Irma J. Stanish, 80, of 1665 Bucktail Rd., St. Marys, died Monday evening, Sept. 1, 2014 at Elk Haven Nursing Home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born May 13, 1934 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Peter and Elizabeth Gerber Herzing. On Oct. 22, 1955 in the St. Maryâ€™s Catholic Church, she married Charles E. â€śChowsieâ€ť Stanish, who preceded her in death on July 26, 1986.
Harold C. "Red" Cheatle, 92, of Mountain Laurel Nursing Home, Clearfield, and formerly of 672 Washington St., St. Marys, died on Monday, Sep. 1, 2014 at Mountain Laurel Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
He was born on Jan. 5, 1922, a son of the late Edward and Lillian Davis Cheatle.
Robert A. Frey, 86, of 9596 Route 219, Brockport, and a former Kersey resident, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014 at Penn Highlands Elk.
He was born Oct. 16, 1927 in St. Marys, son of the late Leo and Veronica Smithbauer Frey.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Kersey schools. He retired from Airco Speer in 1989 after 45 years of service.
Mr. Frey was a member of the St. Boniface Church, an avid hunter and fisherman and loved bowling, woodworking and airplanes.
