Vernon R. Kear, 75, of Poplar Road, Weedville died Sunday, Jan. 12 at DuBois Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born July 21, 1938 in Weedville, son of George and Beatrice Champion Kear Sr. He lived in New Hampshire for 40 years and returned to the Valley in 1999.
In 1958 he married Jeanette Lafleur who survives.
Lois J. Agens, 86, of 101 N. Mill St., Ridgway died Thursday, Jan. 9 at Pinecrest Manor. She was born Nov. 27, 1927 in Corry, daughter of Harry L. and Hazel O. Bullers Agens. She lived for many years in Ridgway. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and the Idler's Club at the Hi-Rise. She retired from the Dietary Dept. at Elk County General Hospital.
She is survived by several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Clark E. Agens.
Andrew M. Kalambukas of Buffalo, N.Y. died on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014 while holding his son's hand.
He was born and raised in St. Marys, son of Markos and Anna Kalambukas.
Andrew was a WWII veteran having entered the Navy on June 14, 1943 just days after graduating from high school. He was a radioman second class and was stationed in the Pacific and Philippines where he served aboard the USS Providence and the USS Hilo.
James A. Taylor, 55 of Washinton St., St. Marys, died on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at Elk Regional Health Center following a short illness.
He was born on June 12, 1958 in St. Marys, a son of the late Gerald Taylor and Alice Bobenrieth Taylor, who survives.
Mr. Taylor was a member of the American Legion and the P.F.L. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and his grandchildren.
Joel Michael Foster, 70, of DuBois, died at home on January 9, 2014 after an extended illness. He was born, July 7, 1943, in DuBois, son of the late Lillian Johnson Foster and Joseph Foster. He married Karen Rhoades Foster on August 25, 1973.
Joel was raised in Brockway where he graduated from high school in 1961. He attended Clarion University and graduated with a degree in secondary science education. While at Clarion, Joel was a member of Pi Gamma Mu, Science Honor Society and Theta Chi Fraternity.
Robert J. â€śSpeckâ€ť Olson, 87, formerly of 645 Evergreen Rd., St. Marys, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014 at the Pinecrest Manor.
He was born in St. Marys on Feb. 20, 1926, son of the late Wilfred O. and Elenora Pfeufer Olson.
Leola A. "Lee" Dippold, 81,Â of Benzinger Road,Â St. Marys, died peacefully at her home onÂ Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014Â after losing her long battle with cancer.
She was born on March 21, 1934 in Cyclone, daughter of the late Clyde "Pep" Stilson and Clara (Argue) Stilson.Â Â
In August of 1952, she married the late Gilbert "Gibby" Dippold who preceeded her in death in 1993.
Mark R. Marche, 41 of 25 Brandy Camp Circle, Ridgway, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2014 at his residence.
He was born Aug. 26, 1972 in Ridgway, son of Theodore â€śJuniorâ€ť and Stella Sarnoski Marche Jr. of Brandy Camp, who survive.
Mark was employed in the past at Smithâ€™s Sports Store in St. Marys, Metaldyne in Ridgway, Joy Manufacturing in Franklin and was employed as a welder at Forum Welding in Clearfield at the time of his death.
Mary Hackett Hayes, 85, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013 at her residence within the Marion Center, Garvey Manor in Hollidaysburg, ending a 10-year ordeal with Alzheimerâ€™s. To her very last day, she demonstrated strength, dignity and character, remarked by all who knew and cared for her.
Mary was born Nov. 24, 1928 in Reynoldsville. She spent her childhood in Ridgway and summers in Driftwood. She graduated from Ridgway Centennial High School in 1946 with her future husband.
William K. Distler, 82, of Endwell and a former resident of Newark Valley, N.Y. and St. Marys, died peacefully on Jan. 1, 2014.
He was a graduate of St. Marys High School. He was a wounded veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Army for 39 months. He was a graduate of Lock Haven Teachers College and received his master's in education from the University of Buffalo.
