The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team raised their record to 4-0 on the year with a 54-39 victory over the Clarion Bobcats last night at Clarion Area High School.
St. Marys used a strong first half, as they were able to build a 27-13 lead at the half. They outscored their hosts 27-26 in the second half to win the game.
â€śIt was a good game for us. We built an early lead, then Clarion closed it a little bit in the third quarter but we were able to penetrate their zone press,â€ť said St. Marys coach Mark Guido.
The Elk Catholic Crusaders picked up their second win of the young season on Friday night at the Aaron J. Straub Gym on the Elk Catholic campus as they defeated the Kane Area High Wolves by a 76-35 score in an AML encounter.
The Crusaders took charge of the game early on and were in command the entire contest.
"I'm pleased with the win tonight, as we shot a little better than in our previous ball games," noted Coach Aaron Straub of the Crusaders. "Defensively we played pretty good ball tonight and I was pleased with the way we were able to draw the charging fouls."
St. Marys takes on Keystone tonight at 7:30 p.m.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team advanced to the finals of the Keystone Tournament with a 73-55 victory over the Coudersport Lady Falcons Friday night.
St. Marys will meet Keystone tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the championship game. Keystone defeated DuBois Central by a 66-38 score. Coudersport and DuBois Central will meet tonight at 6 p.m. in the consolation game.
â€śTonight was a nice team effort. I liked the balanced scoring and defensive play,â€ť said St. Marys Coach Bob Swanson.
Elk County Catholic pulled away in the second half for a 37-23 win over Johnsonburg Wednesday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
After a scoreless first two minutes of the game, Abbi Petrosky nailed two free throws to put ECC up 2-0. Taylor DaCanal added a jump shot to put the Crusaders up 4-0 with 5:13 left. Taylor Harvey of Johnsonburg added a jumper to halve the lead to 4-2 but Karly Carnovale added two points with 3:13 left. The Lady Crusaders led 6-2 after the first quarter.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 54-49 victory over the Port Allegany Gators Wednesday at Port Allegany.
St. Marys was able to take a 36-31 lead at the half. They made that five-point lead hold up as both teams scored 18 second-half points.
â€śWe were never able to build a big cushion,â€ť said St. Marys coach Mark Guido.
â€śOur free-throw shooting let us down but our rebounding tonight was our saving grace. It gave us a lot of second-chance opportunities that we really needed,â€ť he added.
Kayla Hoohuli reaches 2,000 career point plateau
St. Marys Area senior Kayla Hoohuli reached the 2,000 career point plateau last night as the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch handed the Cameron County Lady Raiders a 63-41 loss.
Kayla scored the career mark with 7:58 left in the second quarter of play on a two-pointer. She needed 26 points to reach the milestone and was able to score the first 27 points of the night for the Lady Dutch.
The Elk County Catholic Crusaders notched their first win of the season on Tuesday evening as they held on to defeat the Johnsonburg Area High Rams by a 50-36 score in a game played at the Aaron J. Straub gym on the Elk Cathloic campus.
The game was a lot closer than the final score indicates, as the Johnsonburg Rams were in the game up until the final five minutes, when the Crusaders put it away as they outscored the Rams 15 to 7.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team held on for a 55-49 victory over the Oswayo Valley Green Wave last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
While the Dutch led from the second quarter on, they could not build much of a lead until there was only 2:12 left in the contest, when they went up by 13, 54-41. However, Oswayo Valley then scored eight unanswered points to cut the Dutch lead to 54-49 with 1:11 left. The lone point scored in the final minutes of play was a foul shot by Dutchman Ryan Hockman, making the score 55-49.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling squad opened their 2010-11 season Saturday by competing at the Greenville Duals at the Greenville High School.
The Dutch finished the day with a 3-2 team record. St. Marys started the day by defeating Iroquois 63-6. They then defeated Conneaut Lake by a 37-36 score. The Dutch won the match, which was tied at 36, on Tie Breaker Criteria H which is most points scored first. St. Marys lost to Greenville by a 42-30 score. St. Marys defeated Meadville by a 55-15 score then closed the day with a 58-9 loss to Biglerville.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team opened their season Friday night with a 77-41 victory over the Johnsonburg Rams last night at the SMAHS â€śDutch Ovenâ€ť.
The Dutchmen were able to take charge of the contest, taking the first quarter by an 18-7 margin. St. Marys was leading by an 18-2 score with 2:53 remaining in the quarter.
â€śWe put a lot of work in in the offseason and thatâ€™s what bears fruit at this time of year,â€ť said St. Marys coach Mark Guido.
