JOHNSONBURG â€“Â Aided by effective scoring early on from the starting five, St. Marys (1-0) won the season opener last night in Johnsonburg (0-1) with a 66-45 victory.
The Lady Dutch were powered by senior guard Kayla Hoohuli whose 23 points paced both teams and set her just 26 points shy of the 2,000-point milestone for her high school basketball career.
The standout also finished with 17 rebounds on the night to go with five steals and two blocks.
The Lady Crusaders of Elk County Catholic opened the 2010-11 basketball season in fine fashion on Friday evening as they handed the Ridgway Lady Elkers a 44-10 setback in an AML game played at the Aaron J. Straub Gym on the Elk Catholic campus.
The Lady Crusaders were in control of the ball game from start to finish, as they never trailed.
Ridgway boys basketball has its victory to start the season over Elk County Catholic.
The Elkers led throughout in a close 50-47 victory over the Crusaders Friday night in front of a capacity crowd at Ridgway Area High School.
Ridgway coach Anthony Allegretto said the team came into Friday's game with an expectation for victory.
The Elk County Catholic High School Crusaders placed three players on the Allegheny Mountain League Football All-Star South Division squad.
Ricky Pearsall, who holds the Elk Catholic all-time rushing record, was named to the running back position, while Zac Brody, who led the Crusaders in tackles, was named as a defensive lineman. The other member of the ECCHS squad to make the All-Star squad was offensive lineman Jake Geer. All three players are seniors.
