The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen basketball team picked up their first win of the season in their home opener on Wednesday evening, defeating the Port Allegany Gators 66-35.
"It was excellent," said St. Marys coach Mark Guido of the winning their home opener. "[I'm] real happy with the effort tonight. I thought our defense really set the tone early. We were able to get Port Allegany out of their rhythm, and I thought that was real important. They got frustrated and tired early."
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team raised their record to 2-0 on the young season as they won their home opener last night over the Johnsonburg Ramettes by a 52-39 score.
After Elk Catholic took a 17-8 first-period lead, the Ramettes battled back in the second quarter to take a slim 24-23 lead at the half.
The second half found Elk Catholic outscoring Johnsonburg 29-15 to win the game.
The St. Marys Area gymnastics squad opened their season Wednesday night with an 110.55 to 98.7 victory over the Ridgway gymnasts in a meet held at the St. Marys Area Middle School.
“We were pleasantly surprised that the team was able to pull off the win with such a young, inexperienced squad. The girls did pretty good in trying to keep the first-meet jitters under control, but you could definitely tell they were not all comfortable competing for the first time, especially on the balance beam,” said St. Marys coach Irene McCandless.
