Flying Dutch top Punxsutawney 52-45

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen picked up their ninth victory of the season on Tuesday evening as they defeated the Punxsutawney Chucks by a 52-45 score in a District Nine League encounter at the Punxsutawney Area High School gym.
The Dutchmen fell behind in the first quarter of play, but came on strong in the second quarter to take the lead at the half. They held the lead at the end of three by two points, then outscored the Chucks 15-10 in the final stanza to win the game by seven points.

Kayla Hoohuli leads Lady Dutch to 57-48 win

Led by Kayla Hoohuli’s 46 points, the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch defeated the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks by a 57-48 score last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Chucks led 26-20 at the half. In the second 16 minutes of play, the Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Chucks by a 37-22 margin to win the game. Hoohuli finished the second half with 28 to go along with the 18 she scored in the first half.
The Lady Dutch had a rough shooting night in the first half, as they only hit on eight field goals. Punxsy led by six at the half.

Lady Dutch top Lady Crusaders 58-50

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch picked up their 11th win of the season on Saturday evening as they defeated the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders by a 58-50 score in a District Nine League encounter at the Aaron J. Straub Gymnasium on the Elk Catholic campus.

Dutch gymnasts defeat DuBois Area on Saturday

The St. Marys Area Dutch gymnastics team recorded a 124.4 to 116.95 victory over the DuBois Area squad on Saturday in a meet held at the DuBois Area High School. This is St. Marys’ second win of the season.
“The team competed very well today. I’ve definitely seen the improvements in their performances, routines,” said St. Marys coach Irene McCandless.

Crusaders pick up 51-46 D9 League win over Dutchmen

The Elk County Catholic Crusader basketball team outscored the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen by a 30-23 margin in the second half to pick up a 51-46 District 9 League victory last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
With 5:02 left in the third period, the Dutch held a 30-24 lead. In the final five minutes of the third period the Crusaders outscored the Dutch by a 13-5 margin to take a 35-34 lead with eight minutes remaining. In those final eight minutes Elk Catholic outscored St. Marys 16-12 to win the game.
“That was a really nice win,” said ECCHS coach Aaron Straub.

SMA swim teams sweep Brookville squads

ST. MARYS - The St. Marys Area High School Swim and Dive Team held their 2011 home opener on Thursday night against the Brookville Raiders. The Dutch and Lady Dutch squads won their meets, raising their records to 2-0 for the season.

Dutch wrestlers down short-handed Rams 63-8

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling team raised their record to 5-4 with a 63-8 victory over the short-handed Johnsonburg Rams.
The Dutchmen won nine matches by forfeit: picking up forfeit wins were Evan Smith at 119 pounds, Alex Coudriet at 125, Darren Lyon at 135, Alex Feldbauer at 140, Joe McLaughlin at 189, Jimmy Antonelli at 215, Kevin Hoy at 285, Damien Wensel at 103 and Trenton Bowers at 112 pounds.
In wrestling action, Jesse Wolfe of the Rams recorded a 15-0 technical over Bill Gabor at the 2:42 mark of their 130-pound match.

Bellefonte gymnasts hand St. Marys Area squad first loss

The Bellefonte gymnastics squad defeated the St. Marys Area gymnasts by a 130.325 to 122.05 score Wednesday night in a meet held at the St. Marys Area Middle School.
This was the St. Marys Area squad’s first loss of the season.
“We knew coming into this meet we were going to have a hard time trying to keep up with them. They have a lot of club gymnasts we simply cannot compete with,” said St. Marys coach Irene McCandless.

Dutchmen down DuBois 64-49 in D9 League play

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team used a strong second half to defeat the DuBois Area Beavers by a 64-49 score last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Beavers held a 27-23 lead at the half. The Dutch were able to outscore DuBois by a 41-22 margin in the second half of the contest.
“I didn’t think pressure bothered them and after the first quarter they had a substantial lead,” said St. Marys coach Mark Guido. “We really thought at halftime that we needed to put pressure on them and play our style of game.”

Dutch wrestlers come from behind to beat DuBois 39-36

A pin by Kevin Hoy at 285 pounds gave the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestlers a hard-fought 39-36 victory over the DuBois Area Beavers last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
Hoy, along with fellow senior Jimmy Antonelli, gave the Dutch the victory when they both recorded pins in the final two bouts of the night as St. Marys trailed 36-27 after the 189-pound match.
“That’s what makes high school wrestling great,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra. “That was a great match from a fan’s perspective.
