SMA finishes season with outstanding 22-2 record
CLARION - The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team was eliminated from the PIAA Class AAA tournament on Saturday by a 69-23 score by the New Castle Hurricanes. The first-round game was played at Clarion University’s Waldo Tippin Gymnasium.
The Hurricanes jumped out to an early lead in the contest, opening a 24-4 advantage after the first eight minutes of play. In the second quarter, they outscored the Lady Dutch by a 27-8 margin to take a 51-12 halftime lead.
ALTOONA - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders' season came to on end on Saturday afternoon at the Altoona Area High School gym, as they were defeated in the opening round of the girls' PIAA Class A State Championship tournament by two-time defending state champion Bishop Guilfoyle. The Lady Marauders handed the Lady Crusaders a 36-19 loss in that opening-round game.
CLARION - The Elk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to the second round of the PIAA Class A Tournament with a 58-49 victory over the Serra Catholic Eagles last night at Clarion University’s Waldo Tippin Gymnasium.
The Crusaders will meet Lincoln Park Charter on Tuesday night at a site and time to be announced by the PIAA. Lincoln Park defeated West Middlesex by a 70-35 score last night.
In last night’s game, the Crusaders used an 8-2 run late in the third period and outscored the Eagles 21-13 in the fourth quarter to record their victory.
CLARION - The New Castle Hurricanes proved to be too quick and too hot from the field for the Dutchmen of St. Marys last evening as they handed the Dutch an 80-54 setback in the opening round of the PIAA Class AAA playoffs at Clarion University.
