Rachel Ginther threw a six-hitter on Thursday afternoon as the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team defeated the Hollidaysburg Lady Tigers by a 4-3 score in a game played at the St. Marys Area Softball Field.
Ginther struck out 11 Hollidaysburg batters on her way to the victory and also helped her own cause with a two-run single in the fifth inning to give St. Marys the lead for good in the game.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team earned their first win of the season with an 11-2 victory over the Brookville Blue Raiders. Originally scheduled to be an away game for the Crusaders, the game was moved to Berwind Park after Brookville's field was determined to be unplayable.
"They played well," said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt of the Crusaders' effort. "They got the lead and they kept it and I think Jack (Herzing) set the tone. I think he had like seven out of nine strikeouts. He set the tone for the game. We just had some big hits."
The Punxsutawney Chucks tennis team edged the Elk County Catholic Crusaders by a 5-4 score Thursday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
“It was a tough day today, losing a close match to a talented, well-coached Punxsy team,” said ECCHS coach Nick Caggiano.
