ECC baseball downs Brookville 11-2

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team earned their first win of the season with an 11-2 victory over the Brookville Blue Raiders. Originally scheduled to be an away game for the Crusaders, the game was moved to Berwind Park after Brookville's field was determined to be unplayable.
"They played well," said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt of the Crusaders' effort. "They got the lead and they kept it and I think Jack (Herzing) set the tone. I think he had like seven out of nine strikeouts. He set the tone for the game. We just had some big hits."

Punxsy tennis team edges Crusaders 5-4

The Punxsutawney Chucks tennis team edged the Elk County Catholic Crusaders by a 5-4 score Thursday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
“It was a tough day today, losing a close match to a talented, well-coached Punxsy team,” said ECCHS coach Nick Caggiano.

SMA track and field teams open dual season at Punxsy

The St. Marys Area track and field teams opened their dual meet season Tuesday by traveling to Punxsutawney.
The Punxsy squads swept the St. Marys Area teams. The Chucks beat the Dutch by a 91-59 score, while the Lady Chucks downed the Lady Dutch 95-55.
For the Dutchmen, Brian Merritt was a double winner, as he won the 400 and 200 dashes.
Single winners for the Dutch were Jonathan Prechtl in the 100 hurdles, Gideon Woelfel in the 3200 run, Tyler Mancuso in the pole vault and Jimmy Werner in the discus.

Lady Crusader softball defeats Sheffield Area 13-0

Taylor Schlimm pitched a one-hitter to open the softball season for the Lady Crusaders of Elk County Catholic on Tuesday afternoon at the Benzinger Township softball field. The Lady Crusaders handed the visiting Sheffield Lady Wolverines a 13-0 setback in a game that was ended after four-and-a-half innings due to the 10-run rule.
Schlimm was the winning pitcher for the Lady Crusaders on Tuesday as she held the Lady Wolverines to just one hit, a second-inning single to right field. Schlimm recorded 10 strikeouts on her way to the victory, while giving up four walks.

Dutch lead Chucks 6-3 when game suspended

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team opened their season Tuesday, but only got 2 1/2 innings in before the game with the Punxsutawney Chucks was suspended with St. Marys on top, 6-3.
The game will be picked up when the Dutch travel to Punxsutawney on May 2.
“I was very pleased with the way we played offensively today. We executed well today,” said St. Marys coach Tony Azzato.
“Our pitching and defense has some work to do. Punxsy had the bases loaded in two innings, but our pitchers (Bob Vollmer and Kevin Hoy) battled back and they left the bases loaded.”

Brockway hands ECC 7-4 loss in season opener

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team opened their season on Monday by hosting the Brockway Rovers at Berwind Park. The Rovers were able to take advantage of seven Elk Catholic errors on their way to a 7-4 victory over the Crusaders.
“After two weeks inside you have to be ready to play and we weren’t,” said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt.
“They took advantage of our mistakes and that’s what good teams do. Their pitcher kept us off balance. Thank goodness it’s a long season,” said Father Eric.

Dutch tennis team opens season with win over Altoona

The St. Marys Area Dutch tennis team opened their season on Saturday with a 4-3 victory over the Altoona Lions Saturday at Altoona.
“It was nice to finally be able to get out and play our first match of the season. The boys were waiting for this day to finally arrive,” said St. Marys coach Sue Lepovetsky.
At first singles, SMA’s Brandon Romain lost his match 6-2, 6-0 to James Doeing.
At second singles, Keith Meyer of the Dutch defeated Chris Reighard 6-3, 6-3.
Dylan Wiesner of the Dutch won his match in three sets over Tyler Hollingsworth, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Lady Dutch softball hands State College 6-1 loss Saturday

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team evened their record at 1-1 on the young season with a 6-1 victory over the State College squad in a game played at State College Saturday.
“State College is a good hitting team and puts the ball in play, but our defense played well, only committing one error. Our outfield made some nice catches early in the game to keep State College off the board,” said Lady Dutch coach Manny Gerarge.

SMA's Kayla Hoohuli chosen as Class AAA Player of the Year

St. Marys Area senior guard Kayla Hoohuli was selected at the Class AAA Player of the Year by the sports writers from across Pennsylvania.
Kayla was a first-team pick last year as a junior. She finished as the third leading-scorer ever in District 9 with 2,604 points by averaging 28.4 points per game this season.
Hoohuli has signed with Canisius College. She netted more than 26 points per game in her career.

ECC track teams compete at Igloo Invitational

ALTOONA - Two first places and a meet record by Elk County Catholic senior Megan Dornisch were the headlines as the ECCHS track and field teams competed at the 36th annual Igloo Invitational held in Altoona on Saturday.
The 2010 state champion thrower continued her string of first -place finishes by placing first in the shot put with a meet record 41’ 9” throw. Dornisch also picked up a first place in the discus event with a throw of 127’ 0”.
