Crusaders fend off Gators for 25-19 victory

PORT ALLEGANY – With under one minute remaining in regulation and the seconds quickly ticking away in the fourth quarter of Saturday afternoon’s football game, the Elk County Catholic Crusaders faced fourth-and-goal at Port Allegany’s one-yard-line with the score tied at 19-all. Two possessions earlier the team had been in a similar scenario, driving all the way to the Gator’s three-yard-line before being shut down by Port’s defense and turning the ball over on downs.

Lady Crusaders and Lady Dutch battle to 2-2 tie

The St. Marys Area and Elk County Catholic girls’ soccer teams battled to a 2-2 tie Saturday morning at Benzinger Park.
While St. Marys held a 1-0 lead after the first 40 minutes of play, Elk Catholic tied the match at 1-all at the 37:51 mark. The Lady Crusaders took the 2-1 lead with 22:09 left only to see St. Marys tie the match at 2-all at the 17:31 mark.
In the two overtime periods, Elk Catholic had six shots to St. Marys Area’s one but neither team could find the goal.

Punxsutawney Chucks beat Dutch soccer 2-0 Saturday

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch soccer team saw their record slip to 4-4 on the season as the Punxsutawney Chucks handed the Dutch a 2-0 loss Saturday afternoon at the SMAHS soccer field.
Neither team scored in the first half as the game was played on fairly even terms with neither team being able to gain much of an advantage.
The second 40 minutes saw the Chucks take charge as they recorded the victory.
In the first half Punxsy outshot the Dutch by an 8-5 margin. Dutch keeper Brett Lanzel came up with five saves in the first half.

Dutch improve to 4-0, beat Clarion 20-16

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch football team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 20-16 victory over the Clarion Bobcats last night at Dutch Country Stadium.
The first half of last night’s Homecoming game was played in a steady rain.
The Dutch were able to score all of their points in the first half, then hold the Bobcats to only a safety in the second half.
“This was a very big win for us under adverse conditions. Our quarterback went down and our running back went down,” said Dutch coach Joe Schlimm. “I am proud of our kids for finding a way to win.

Lady Dutch volleyball handed 3-0 loss by Bradford

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball team is now 3-3 on the season after a 3-0 loss to the Bradford Lady Owls Thursday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Owls took the first game 25-21. They won the second game 25-11 and took the third game 25-12 to win the match in three straight.

Ridgway volleyball hands ECC 3-0 defeat

The Ridgway Lady Elker volleyball team improved to 7-0 on the season as they handed the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader squad a 3-0 loss at the ECCHS gym.
The Lady Elkers won all three games by identical 25-23 scores.
“We came off of Tuesday’s match with Kane knowing that they did not see us at our best,” said Ridgway coach Janet Redmond. “We had a very good practice last night. The girls are determined and we had a good competitive match against Elk Catholic.”

Coudersport blanks Dutch soccer 2-0

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen boys' soccer team was shut out 2-0 by the Coudersport Falcons on Thursday afternoon in a match played at the St. Marys Area High School soccer field.
"We were outplayed today. We didn't play as a team like we've been in the couple recent games and it showed out there. They outplayed us the whole game. They looked like the better team," said St. Marys coach Russ Micale.
