The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch football team opened the 2011 season with a 34-28 victory over the Brookville Raiders Friday night at Dutch Country Stadium before a good-sized crowd.
“That was a good football game. It was well-played by both squads,” said Dutch coach Joe Schlimm. “I thought we played gutsy and played with emotion and heart.”
“During our second possession of the second half, we began to win the battle at the line of scrimmage,” he said.
Three goals in a span of three minutes and 56 seconds of the second half helped lift the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders varsity soccer team to a 4-0 season-opening victory Friday afternoon over the visiting DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals.
The two teams played evenly in the scoreless first half. ECC held a slim 6-4 edge in shots at intermission, and only a couple of difficult saves by freshman Lady Crusaders goalkeeper Hanna Onink kept the Lady Cardinals off the scoreboard.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader boys' soccer team opened their season with a win at home on Friday evening, blanking the DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals 1-0 in a match played under the lights at the Angela Huey Memorial Field in Kersey.
"We're happy to open the season with a win," said ECC head coach Adam Bailey. "I think we have a lot of work to do. I'd say, given the play and the way we performed, I think there's a lot of things we can refine.

In a case of cross-town rivalry at its best, the Elk County Catholic Crusader golf team edged the squad from St. Marys Area High School 224-225 in a close match played at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course on Thursday afternoon.
"It was as good of a match as we could have asked for," said St. Marys Area head coach Dan Vollmer. "Unfortunately for the Dutch, one of the players added incorrectly and had to take a higher score than they shot."
Eight players from each school participated in the match; however, only the top five scores from each team counted for their total.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader golf squad picked up a pair of wins on Wednesday afternoon as they defeated the Johnsonburg Rams and the Kane Wolves in a tri-match held at the St. Marys Golf Club. Elk Catholic won the match with a score of 211. Johnsonburg had a score of 219, while Kane had a score of 260. The match featured eight golfers from Elk Catholic, five from Johnsonburg and six from Kane; however, only the top five scores from each team counted for the match.
