The Elk County Catholic Crusader tennis team raised their record to 3-0 on the season as they edged the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen by a 5-4 score Thursday afternoon in a match played at the Benzinger and Memorial Park courts.
âThat was a very competitive match today, to say the least,â said ECCHS coach Nick Caggiano. âIt could have gone either way, easily. St. Marys has some good shot-makers on their team and very consistent hitters.â
âItâs been a wacky week in terms of weather, but I think we adapted well. Our competitiveness got us over the finish line today,â said Caggiano.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team picked up a 7-2 victory over the Ridgway Elkers in their home opener at Berwind Park on Thursday afternoon.
Ridgway put a run on the board in the top of the first inning to take an early lead, but the Crusaders immediately answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a lead that they would never relinquish.
Elk County Catholic High School held its 2011-2012 Winter Athletic Awards Program on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in the school's auditorium.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team was down 3-1 to the Brockway Lady Rovers and it looked like ECC might record their first loss of the young season. The team's only run had come from Jena Struble in the third inning, and they were not even in a position to tie the game with only a runner on second base.
The Elk County Catholic track and field teams opened their seasons Tuesday afternoon by traveling to Punxsutawney where they split with the Chuck squads.
The Lady Crusaders defeated the Lady Chucks 87-63 while the Chucks downed the Crusaders 105-45.
âWe had a good outing at Punxsy today,â said ECCHS coach John Schneider.
âIt was definitely a learning day as we found out things we are doing well and things we need to work on. We definitely had a positive opening to our season,â said the coach.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team raised their record to 2-0 on the young season as they defeated the DuBois Area Lady Beavers by an 8-5 score Monday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.
The Lady Dutch took the early 5-0 lead after two innings, with DuBois scoring three runs in the third inning to cut the Lady Dutch lead to 5-3. St. Marys came up with three insurance runs in the fourth inning as they held on for the 8-5 win.
RIDGWAY - St. Marys Area softball pitcher Rachel Ginther had a perfect start to her season.
Ginther threw a perfect game against the Lady Elkers in an 18-0, 5-inning win over Ridgway Friday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Ginther struck out 11 of the 15 batters she faced and had a stretch of five strikeouts in a row from the second until the fourth innings.
"With Rachel throwing a perfect game, you can't ask for much more," St. Marys Area coach Manny Gerarge said. "It's a good way to start the season."
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team opened their season Friday by traveling to Bradford, where they defeated the Bradford Lady Owls 10-0 in a five-inning contest.
Taylor Schlimm threw a one-hitter for Elk Catholic while striking out 13 batters.
âTaylor was dominant today,â noted ECCHS coach Joe Coroso. âShe struck out 13 of the 17 batters she faced.â
âOur hitting was slow to start, but improved as the game progressed. It was also very balanced throughout the lineup,â said Coroso.
LEWISBURG âÂ The two days at Bucknellâs Kinney Natatorium were well-spent for the Dutch and Lady Dutch swimmers and divers when they competed at the PIAA AA State Championships this past wekeend. The team came home with a state medal, three school records, All-American honors and numerous best times as a result of their efforts.
Eleven members of the St. Marys Area High School Swim and Dive Team are at Bucknell University gearing up for the PIAA state meet, which begins today. Swimmers who qualified for the meet are Emma Daghir, Alex Renwick, Andrew Cotter, Corey Koss, Jeffrey Moore, Kylee Proudfit, Matt Hoffman, and Ryan Struble. Divers are Jake Burns, Kyle Pistner, and Tim Mosebarger.
