ECC plays host to SMA today
The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team held on to defeat the Brockway Rovers by a 6-4 score Thursday afternoon at Berwind Park.
Elk Catholic opened a 4-0 lead after one inning of play before the game was stopped for 30 to 45 minutes for a rain delay. When the game resumed, neither team scored until the top of the fifth, when the Rovers scored a run. Elk answered with two runs in the home half of the fifth to open a 6-1 lead. Brockway was able to score three runs in the top of the sixth to make the score 6-4, where it remained.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team improved their record to 10-0 on the season with a 10-0 victory in six innings over the visiting Ridgway Lady Elkers Wednesday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
The Lady Crusaders scored seven runs in the home half of the sixth inning to put the game away with the 10-run mercy rule in effect.
“We were a little rusty after the week off,” said ECCHS coach Joe Coroso. “Taylor Schlimm threw another gem and Jessie Ginther had the only extra base hit of the contest. Everyone hit the ball hard and sometimes that’s all you can ask.”
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen baseball team was dealt a tough 11-1 five-inning loss by DuBois Area High School on Wednesday afternoon at Berwind Park in St. Marys.
St. Marys' lone run came in the second inning, while DuBois scored one in the first, three in the third and fifth, and four in the fourth.
Elk County Catholic baseball lost a 2-1, 8-inning game to Ridgway Wednesday afternoon at Sandy Beach Recreational Park.
Sam and Josh Roselli had RBI singles in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively, for the Elkers.
In the eighth inning, Josh Roselli hit a flare which dropped just over shortstop for the Crusaders, which allowed Jesse Reynolds to score the winning run from second base. After a 5-3 groundout and a strikeout, Reynolds was able to reach second base on an ECC throwing error trying to get Reynolds out at first.
