Rams' lone loss most costly defeat
One is the loneliest number.
Elk County Catholic (16-5) dealt previously undefeated Johnsonburg (20-1) a stunning 5-2 defeat Wednesday afternoon at Sandy Beach Recreational Park, ousting the No. 1 seed from the District 9 Class A baseball playoffs in the process. Throughout the season, one run was often times the difference in a game for the Rams; on Wednesday, just one loss spoiled their season and kept them out of both the district title game and the state playoffs.
BROCKWAY - The Punxsutawney Chucks scored five runs in the home half of the first inning on their way to a 6-0 victory over the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch Wednesday afternoon in the District 9 Class AAA championship game, played at Brockway Area High School.
The Chucks used three hits and two St. Marys errors to score those five first-inning runs.
“It was a tough day for us to go cold,” said St. Marys coach Tony Azzato. “We didn’t get the hits when we needed to and when we did hit the ball, it was right at them.”
BROCKWAY – The St. Marys Lady Dutch struggled to get their offense going and made a few errors on defense on Wednesday afternoon, allowing the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks to take a 7-1 victory for another D9 AAA softball title.
"[We made a few] early mistakes, and we couldn't recover from that," said St. Marys coach Manny Gerarge.
