BROOKVILLE - The St. Marys Area High School swim and dive team had a very successful first regular meet of the season when they traveled to Brookville on Thursday evening. Both squads won their meets, with the Lady Dutch outpacing the Lady Raiders 115-33, while the Dutchmen scored 114 to the Raidersâ€™ 40.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling squad won six of the last eight bouts to come from behind to defeat the Corry Beavers by a 37-32 score Thursday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Dutch were trailing 25-3 when Ray Dent won by forfeit at 106 pounds. Dutchman Willie McGonnell won a major decision and Evan Smith won by forfeit. Dylan Smith picked up a pin at 126 to knot the score at 25-all. After Corry won a decision at 132 to go up 28-25, Dutchman Tyler Yetzer won by a pin and Sam Miller won by forfeit to make the score 37-28 with one match remaining.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team remains undefeated after picking up a 47-29 victory over the visiting Punxsutawney Lady Chucks on Wednesday evening at ECCHS.
"I thought we played a pretty good basketball game," said ECC coach Ken Pistner. "It wasn't real sloppy, and I had us for 14 or 15 turnovers. I thought Punxsy played really hard, too. It was a good basketball game tonight."
Elk Catholic held a 12-5 lead at the end of the first period, was up 23-13 at the end of the second, and 29-22 at the conclusion of the third.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team raised their District 9 League record to 2-1 with a 56-46 victory over the DuBois Area Lady Beavers last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
After the Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Beavers 11-6 in the first quarter, they outscored DuBois 37-23 in the next two quarters to take a 48-29 lead with only eight minutes remaining.
â€śItâ€™s all about defense and we played great defense tonight,â€ť said St. Marys coach Leona Hoohuli.
The St. Marys Area Quarterback Club held their 54th Awards Program Saturday night at the St. Marys Area High School Carpin Auditorium.
Following the invocation by Tim Kopp, everyone was welcomed by Bob Luchini, master of ceremonies for the evening. Luchini noted that the St. Marys Area Quarterback Club is an all-volunteer group dedicated to supporting the SMAHS football program.
Quarterback Club President Steve Aul welcomed everyone and said the reason for the change to just an awards program was that the school district had discontinued their banquets due to budget cuts.
SMA swim team makes big statement at 2012 Arctic Swim Classic
CLEARFIELD - The SMA swim team made a big statement at the 2012 Arctic Swim Classic at Clearfield High School on Saturday. The annual invitational featured 10 teams from various districts and PIAA classes.
The Dutchmen made a strong showing, capturing second place overall, while the Lady Dutch brought home a fourth-place trophy. This is the first competition for the team, officially kicking off their 2012 season.
St. Marys will travel to Altoona tonight for a 6 p.m. meet
BELLEFONTE â€“Â The St. Marys Area gymnastics squad traveled to Bellefonte on Saturday to compete in the Bellefonte Bash Invitational.
"The girls did really well and we are continuing to see our scores go up, especially on our two most difficult events - bars and beam," said St. Marys Area coach Irene McCandless. "We seem to be staying pretty steady score-wise on vault and floor."
McCandless noted that senior Michaela Sorg had an "awesome" floor routine and hit her career highest score of 8.475.
The Elk County Catholic Crusaders defeated the Sheffield Wolverines 63-57 last night in a game played at ECCHS.
Sheffield led for the first half of the contest, holding a 8-6 advantage at the end of the first period and a 17-15 lead at halftime. ECC came to life in the second half, taking a 36-29 lead at the end of the third quarter and then holding on for the 63-57 victory.
"It was a good win," said ECC coach Aaron Straub. "Any time you can give up 28 points in the fourth quarter and still win has got to be a good one."
The Bradford Area Lady Owls basketball team escaped with a 54-51 District 9 League victory over the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
