The St. Marys Senior Little League Baseball Senior League All-Stars put together an exciting run, winning the District 10 and Section 1 titles, and reaching the Pa. State Tournament, which was held this year at Showers Field in DuBois. Like all good things though, that run came to an end on Friday afternoon as St. Marys was dealt a 6-1 loss by defending state champion Kennett Square (KAU Little League) and were eliminated from the tournament.
The St. Marys Little League Baseball Senior League All-Stars opened play in the Pa. State Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Showers Field in DuBois, taking on Section 3 champion Montoursville. St. Marys was able to keep the game close until the final inning when Montoursville added a few more runs for insurance to claim a 5-1 victory.
The St. Marys American Legion Post 103 squad would have needed to beat undefeated Albion twice on Wednesday afternoon in order to claim the title in this year's Region 8 Tournament, but ended up being overpowered by the host team in the first game and finishing as the runner-up following an 8-0 loss.
The St. Marys American Legion Post 103 team defeated Corry 7-4 on Tuesday afternoon in an elimination game in the Region 8 Tournament, and then handed Millcreek their second loss, 6-5, later that evening to advance to the final day of the Region 8 Tournament, which is being held at Northwestern High School in Albion.
Today's action will see undefeated Albion taking on French Creek Valley at 10 a.m. with the winner meeting St. Marys at 1 p.m.
The St. Marys American Legion Post 103 squad defeated Wesleyville 10-0 in eight innings on Monday morning in an elimination game in the Region 8 Tournament in Albion.
St. Marys plays Corry this afternoon at 1 p.m. in an elimination game.
Needing only one more out to claim the Section 1 title, St. Marys' relief pitcher Brad Dippold worked Crawford County's Steven Hollabaugh into a 1-2 count in the top of the seventh inning. The previous batter, Alex Vincent, had singled, and a balk put him on second, waiting to try to score and cut into St. Marys' slim 4-2 lead if Hollabaugh put the ball in play.
Down by two runs, the St. Marys American Legion Post 103 squad used a six-run fifth inning rally to take the lead against Smethport on Thursday evening at Berwind Park. The Post 103 squad then held off an attempt to rally by Smethport in the top of the sixth to hold on for a 6-4 victory.
The St. Marys Little League senior softball all stars lost to the French Creek Valley all stars in the finals of the Section 1 Tournament played at Saegertown Thursday.
The St. Marys American Legion Post 103 baseball team opened play in the Elk County Legion Baseball League with a 19-2 victory over the Ridgway squad last night at Berwind Park.
Last night's other playoff scores were: Smethport 6, Fox 6; Bradford 11, Brockway 0; Wilcox 11, Mt. Jewett 5.
Tonight's schedule will see Smethport at St. Marys at 7:30 p.m.; Ridgway at Fox at 5:30 p.m.; Bradford at Wilcox at 5:30 p.m. and Mt. Jewett at Brockway at 5:30 p.m.
The Punxsutawney Minor League Softball All-Star squad edged the St. Marys squad by a 13-12 score Wednesday night at Benzinger Park.
St. Marys was the winner of the winner's bracket while Punxsutawney won the loser's bracket. With Punxsy's win, the two teams will meet again on Friday as the District 10 Tournament is a double elimination affair. A coin flip determined that St. Marys will travel to Punxsy Friday night for the title game.
