Dutch wrestlers advance 11 to Class AAA Northwest Regional

The St. Marys Area Dutch wrestling team ended Saturday's District 9 Class AAA Individual Wrestling Tournament with three District champions, five runners-up, and three third-place finishers. All 11 wrestlers will advance to Saturday's Class AAA Northwest Regional Wrestling Tournament in Altoona to compete for a chance to advance to the PIAA Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championships the following weekend. Additionally, Dutch head coach Dominic Surra was named Class AAA Coach of the Year, and assistant coach Doug Surra was inducted into the District 9 Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Surra named Class AAA Coach of the Year

St. Marys Area Dutch wrestling head coach Dominic Surra was named the Class AAA Coach of the Year on Saturday night during the District 9 Class AA and AAA Individual Wrestling Tournament at Clarion University. It was the first time Surra, who is in his fifth season as head coach of the Dutchmen, has received the Coach of the Year honor.

Crusaders down Union 77-41 to reach semifinals

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to the semifinals of the District 9 Class A basketball tournament with a 77-41 victory over the Union Knights Friday night in a game played at the DuBois Area High School.

Lady Crusaders advance with 48-26 win over DCC

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders faced the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals for the second time in a week and the third time this season on Friday night in a District 9 Class A quarterfinal matchup held at Brockway Area High School. Just as in their first two meetings, the undefeated ECC girls dispatched the Lady Cardinals, this time by the score of 48-26.

Kentucky came out and took care of business against one of the SEC cellar dwellers. The Wildcats opened up a 25 point lead before the half was over and then put in in cruise control for the second half. Willie Cauley-Stein led the balanced scoring effort by Kentucky with 14 points.

SMA gymnasts finish as runner-up at league championships

The St. Marys Area gymnastics team finished as the runner-up at the Central Pa. Gymnastics League championships, which were held in DuBois at the DuBois Area High School Friday. St. Marys finished less than three points behind Altoona in the battle for first place.
Altoona won the league title with a total score of 130.275. St. Marys was next with 127.375, followed by Bellefonte 121.975, DuBois Area 117.9, and Ridgway 114.625.

Lady Crusaders win fourth straight AML title

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders won their fourth straight girls' Allegheny Mountain League title Saturday night when they defeated the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals 49-30 in the title game played at the St. Marys Area High School.

Elk County Catholic's Nate DaCanal's field goal with seconds left gave the Elk County Catholic Crusaders a hard fought 47-46 win over the Ridgway Elkers Saturday night in the Allegheny Mountain League championship played at the St. Marys Area High School.
