The Elk County Catholic Crusader basketball team advanced to the District 9 Class A championship game by defeating the Johnsonburg Rams by a 66-47 score Wednesday night at Clarion University.
The Crusaders were able to take advantage of a poor shooting night by the Rams. Johnsonburg was 15 of 53 from the field for 28 percent while Elk Catholic was 20 of 38 for 61 percent. Elk Catholic was seven of 17 from behind the three-point arc while the Rams wee three of 29.
Former St. Marys Area wrestling coach Wayne Fordoski was one of seven individuals inducted into the District 9 Wrestling Hall of Fame on Saturday night, during a ceremony held prior to the AA and AAA finals at the District 4/9 Wrestling Championships at Clarion University.
Each year, the District 9 Chapter of the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association (PWCA) recognizes inductees for their "outstanding achievements and contributions as wrestlers, coaches, and contributors to the sport of wrestling."
The St. Marys Area Dutch wrestling team claimed the team title at the District 4/9 AAA Wrestling Championships at Clarion University on Saturday, edging District 4's Jersey Shore 161.5-157.5 in the final team standings.
St. Marys also had 11 wrestlers finish on the podium: 160-pound champion Bill Gabor; runners-up Ray Dent, Tyler Yetzer, and Josh Cameroni; third-place finishers Kyle Pecht, Alex Feldbauer, and Derek Taylor; and fourth-place finishers Cameron Resch, Willie McGonnell, DJ Salinas, and Mike Wolfel.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the District 9 Class A tournament with a 48-39 victory over the Venango Catholic Vikings Friday night at Brookville.
The fifth-seeded Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders saw their season come to an end on Friday night in Brookville as the fourth-seeded Clarion Lady Bobcats led from start to finish to hand ECC a 67-40 loss in a District 9 Class A quarterfinal contest played at Brookville High School. The loss eliminates the Lady Crusaders from the playoffs.
The St. Marys Area gymnastics squad competed in the PA Classic Gymnastics Championship held at Moon Township last Friday and Saturday.
The St. Marys squad competed in the Bronze Division where they placed third as a team with 125.950 points. Waynesboro won the team title with 128.749 followed by Southside Beaver 126.967, St. Marys, DuBois 122.301 and Hopewell 115.683.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders captured the 2014 Allegheny Mountain League championship Saturday night by defeating the Kane Lady Wolves by a 51-37 score.
Senior point guard Cole Peterson did just about everything possible to bring another AML championship to Johnsonburg.
Peterson had a 3-point play, a 4-point play and a game-high 28 points to lead the Rams to a 59-41 victory over Elk County Catholic Saturday night in the boys AML Championship game held at St. Marys Area High School.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders easily defeated the Brockway Lady Rovers 61-16 on Friday night at ECC in an AML semifinal matchup to advance to tonight's AML championship game, which will be held at St. Marys Area High School at 6 p.m. The Lady Crusaders will take on the Kane Lady Wolves in tonight's contest. Kane defeated the DCC Lady Cardinals 31-28 on Friday night in a game played at DuBois Central Catholic High School.
The Elk County Catholic Crusaders needed a strong second half to advance to the Allegheny Mountain League championship Friday night as they defeated the DuBois Central Cardinals by a 55-46 score in a very hard fought contest.
