The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team raised their record to 3-1 with a 13-0, five-inning victory over the Ridgway Lady Elkers Thursday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.
Rachel Ginther of the Lady Dutch threw a one-hitter as she faced 16 batters, striking out nine and giving up a single to the first batter she faced, Jenni Thomas.
Taylor Roseto started on the mound for Ridgway and worked one inning, giving up one hit, walking three and striking out one. Jenna Hoffman worked three innings, giving up five hits and walking four.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team never gave up on Wednesday afternoon during a tough game against the DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals in a contest that was originally scheduled to be played in DuBois, but was then moved to Berwind Park in St. Marys. Down 12-10 headed into the bottom of the seventh, the Crusaders rallied to come back from a 13-12 victory, with the winning run driven in on a walk-off single by Joe McLaughlin.
SMA hosts Ridgway today
The Punxsutawney Lady Chucks softball team used a squeeze play in the top of the seventh inning to record the winning run as they edged the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch 2-1 Wednesday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.
Punxsy took the 1-0 lead in the top of the first, with the Lady Dutch scoring in the home half of the inning. Neither team scored the remainder of the game until the top half of the seventh, when Punxsy manufactured the winning run.

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch tennis team improved to 2-2 on the season with a 9-0 victory over the DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals Tuesday afternoon at the SMAHS courts.
At first singles, Dutchman Michael Fox defeated Elliott Laparne 6-2, 7-6 (7-2).
Dutchman Evan Lepovetsky defeated Tom Boyer 6-4, 6-4 at second singles.
At third singles, SMAâs Jarred Lipsey beat Jacob Aravich 6-0, 6-0.
At fourth singles, Gary Fledderman of the Dutch defeated Ben Trinkley 6-2, 6-4.
Eric Uhl of the Dutch defeated Julie Fitzer 6-4, 7-5 at fifth singles.
The DuBois Area track and field teams swept the Elk County Catholic squads in a meet held Tuesday afternoon at the ECCHS track and field complex.
The Lady Crusaders lost by a 96-54 score, while the Crusaders lost 114-56.
In the girlsâ meet, Elk Catholic was led by triple winner Kennedy Weisner as she won the 800 run, 400 dash and was a member of the winning 3200 relay team.
Victoria Dippold was a double winner. She took the 3200 run and was a member of the winning 3200 relay team.
JOHNSONBURG â Taylor Schlimm gave up only one hit Monday afternoon as Elk County Catholic won a 20-0 3-inning shutout over host Johnsonburg.
ECC erupted for 18 runs in a marathon second inning while Schlimm systematically shut down the Ramettes in the 1-hit win. She struck out six batters en route to the shutout.
The visiting Lady Crusaders opened up with a run in the first inning but broke the game open with an 18-run second inning.
The Johnsonburg Rams picked up a 7-0 shutout victory over the Elk County Catholic Crusaders at Berwind Park on Monday afternoon. Cole Peterson went the distance for the Rams, giving up just two hits while striking out 14.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader tennis team raised their record to 3-0 on the season as they edged the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen by a 5-4 score Thursday afternoon in a match played at the Benzinger and Memorial Park courts.
âThat was a very competitive match today, to say the least,â said ECCHS coach Nick Caggiano. âIt could have gone either way, easily. St. Marys has some good shot-makers on their team and very consistent hitters.â
âItâs been a wacky week in terms of weather, but I think we adapted well. Our competitiveness got us over the finish line today,â said Caggiano.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team picked up a 7-2 victory over the Ridgway Elkers in their home opener at Berwind Park on Thursday afternoon.
Ridgway put a run on the board in the top of the first inning to take an early lead, but the Crusaders immediately answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a lead that they would never relinquish.
Elk County Catholic High School held its 2011-2012 Winter Athletic Awards Program on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in the school's auditorium.
