RIMERSBURG â€“Â A poster board hanging on the wall in the gymnasium at Union High School reads "We love the game because every dribble, shot, or pass is an opportunity for disaster or glory." The former was true for the #2 seeded Union Knights on Friday evening as they struggled to get any momentum going and saw their season come to an end, while the latter was true for the #7 seeded Elk County Catholic Crusaders as they led all the way to take a 59-38 win and advance to the semifinals of the District 9 Class A playoffs.
St. Marys eliminates Clearfield 59-48
HYDE - The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team advanced to the District 9-AAA championship game by defeating the Clearfield Lady Bisons 59-48 last night at the Clearfield Area High School. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday, March 3 at Clarion Universityâ€™s Waldo Tippin gymnasium at a time to be announced.
The Lady Dutch will meet the winner of tonightâ€™s Punxsutawney at Bradford game.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders jumped out to an early lead against the Port Allegany Lady Gators on Thursday evening in a District 9 quarterfinal game at ECCHS, and continued to pull away to take a 50-24 victory.
Elk Catholic coach Ken Pistner credited the team's good start with being very important to their overall success on the evening.
ST. MARYS - The diving portion of the 2012 District 9 Swim & Diving Championships was held on Thursday evening at the SMAHS natatorium. The Lady Dutch and Dutchmen were well-represented, with six of the 13 divers from the participating teams of Clearfield, DuBois and St. Marys.Â
The Elk County Catholic Crusader basketball team advanced to the District 9 Class A quarterfinals by defeating the Cameron County Red Raiders by a 58-48 score Wednesday night at the ECCHS gym.
The Crusaders started out slow as they were outscored 13-5 in the first quarter, but ended the first half tied at 22. In the second half of the game, Elk Catholic outscored the Raiders by a 36-26 margin to advance.
The Crusaders will now travel to Rimersburg Friday night for a 7 p.m. game with second seed Union Knights.
Dutch squad takes second in state bronze division
The St. Marys Area gymnastics squad brought home a silver plaque in the PA Classic Team Championship, with two members of the squad winning gold medals. The team brought home a total of 13 medals.
Bringing home individual championships were senior Michaela Sorg in the balance beam and sophomore Mackenzie Neureiter in the floor exercise.
ST. MARYS - If there is a recipe for ending a regular season on the highest note possible, the St. Marys Area swim and dive team certainly found it.Â Mix one pool record, one school record, 13 talented seniors, 18 top times then add in two winning season records and you have the kind of night that makes months of hard work well worth the effort.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team captured the 2012 Allegheny Mountain League girlsâ€™ championship Saturday night by defeating the Kane Lady Wolves 38-25 at the St. Marys Area High School.
The Lady Crusaders were able to take the early 4-0 lead and led 10-6 at the end of the first quarter. They led 21-12 at the half and never trailed throughout the contest.
â€śThroughout the year we have been playing good defensive basketball,â€ť said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner. â€śAt this time of the year we are going in the right direction. Weâ€™re getting better.â€ť
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders advanced to tonightâ€™s Allegheny Mountain League championship game with a 43-26 victory over the Brockway Lady Rovers last night at the ECCHS gym.
Elk Catholic will meet the Kane Lady Wolves, who defeated the DuBois Central Lady Cardinals 53-47 last night at DuBois Central.
Last night at the ECCHS gym the Lady Crusaders opened a 12-4 lead after the first quarter, then scored the first eight points of the second period to take a 20-4 lead before Brockway could get on the board in the second eight minute stanza.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch picked up a 67-31 senior night victory over the Ridgway Lady Elkers on Friday evening at St. Marys Area High School.
The Lady Dutch led all the way, taking a 19-7 first-period advantage, leading 36-12 at the half, and 52-20 at the end of three quarters.
"It was a nice win on senior night recognizing our three seniors. They played well tonight," said St. Marys coach Leona Hoohuli.
