The St. Marys Area swimming teams placed second (Dutchmen) and third (Lady Dutch) at the 2011 District Nine League Swimming and Diving championships held at the St. Marys Area High Natatorium on Friday and Saturday.
Three St. Marys Area Divers placed in the top four of the 2011 District 9 League Diving championships held on Friday evening at the St. Marys Area High School Natatorium.
Jake Burns of the Dutch recorded 402.30 points in his 11 dives to capture first place in the championship meet.
Teammate Justin Huey recorded 381.85 points to finish second, with Elliott Lauder of Clearfield taking third with 380 points.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team advanced to the District 9 Class AAA championship game by defeating the Clearfield Bisons by a 50-23 score last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Dutchmen will meet the Bradford Owls at a time and site to be announced by the District 9 basketball committee. Bradford edged the Punxsutawney Chucks by a 41-38 score in overtime. That game was played at Punxsutawney.
KANE - The Lady Crusaders of Elk County Catholic played an excellent game on Thursday night as they came up with a 59-46 victory over the Lady Wolves of Kane Area High in the District 9-A quarterfinals held at the Wolves' Den in Kane.
The Lady Crusaders never trailed in the ball game as they went out to a 6-0 lead early in the game and then held on for the victory. Three times during the game the Lady Wolves cut the Elk Catholic lead to one or two points, but each time the Lady Crusaders regrouped and pushed the lead back up to five or six points.
The Elk County Catholic Crusaders opened play in the District 9 Class A boysâ€™ basketball tournament with a 67-51 victory over the Oswayo Valley Green Wave Wednesday night at the ECCHS gym.
The Crusaders will now meet the Coudersport Falcons Friday night at the ECCHS gym. Coudersport defeated the Northern Potter Panthers last night by a 49-33 score. The start time is tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestlers received two top seeds for Saturdayâ€™s District 9 Class AAA individual tournament being held at Clarion Universityâ€™s Waldo Tippin Gymnasium.
Receiving the top seeds were Joe McLaughlin at 189 pounds and Kevin Hoy at 285 pounds.
Those receiving second seeds were Evan Smith at 119 pounds and Jimmy Antonelli 215 pounds.
Two St. Marys wrestlers received third seeds. They were Alex Coudriet at 125 pounds and Sam Miller at 140 pounds.
Receiving fourth seeds were Bill Gabor at 130 pounds, Allan Gursky at 145 pounds and Michael Brennen at 160 pounds.
The 2011 District 9 League Swimming and Diving Championships will be hosted this weekend at the SMAHS Natatorium. The weekend will feature swimming and diving talent from the District, which includes Bradford, Brookville, Clearfield, DuBois as well as the hosting Dutchmen and Lady Dutch squads.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders jumped out to an early lead against the Smethport Lady Hubbers in the opening round of the District 9-A playoffs, then coasted to a 54-22 victory in a game played at the Aaron J. Straub Gym at Elk Catholic.
The win moves the Lady Crusaders into the second round of the playoffs on Thursday evening at Kane.
"This was a good playoff win for us," said Ken Pistner, head coach of the Lady Crusaders. "We took care of business tonight and in the process got a lot of playing time for all of our players.
The St. Marys Area Dutch gymnastics squad placed second at the Central Pa. Gymnastics League held Saturday at the St. Marys Area Middle School.
The Bellefonte squad won the title with 137.125 points, followed by St. Marys with 129.225, Altoona 127.350, DuBois 117.875 and Ridgway 104.350.
â€śI was very pleased with the way the team performed at this championship meet,â€ť said St. Marys coach Irene McCandless. â€śThey did well, although we did have some shaky moments during the meet, but the team was able to keep it together and push through and snatch the second place spot.
ST. MARYS â€“ The Elk County Catholic Crusaders won the Allegheny Mountain League boys' basketball championship with a 65-55 victory over Ridgway Saturday night in the Dutch Oven at St. Marys Area High School.
It is Elk County Catholic's second consecutive league championship and capped a week in which the Crusaders defeated Brookville, Bradford, DuBois Central Catholic and Ridgway.
