St. Marys Area to host District 9 League swimming and Diving

The 2011 District 9 League Swimming and Diving Championships will be hosted this weekend at the SMAHS Natatorium. The weekend will feature swimming and diving talent from the District, which includes Bradford, Brookville, Clearfield, DuBois as well as the hosting Dutchmen and Lady Dutch squads.

Lady Crusaders advance to D-9A second round

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders jumped out to an early lead against the Smethport Lady Hubbers in the opening round of the District 9-A playoffs, then coasted to a 54-22 victory in a game played at the Aaron J. Straub Gym at Elk Catholic.
The win moves the Lady Crusaders into the second round of the playoffs on Thursday evening at Kane.
"This was a good playoff win for us," said Ken Pistner, head coach of the Lady Crusaders. "We took care of business tonight and in the process got a lot of playing time for all of our players.

Dutch gymnasts place second at league championships

The St. Marys Area Dutch gymnastics squad placed second at the Central Pa. Gymnastics League held Saturday at the St. Marys Area Middle School.
The Bellefonte squad won the title with 137.125 points, followed by St. Marys with 129.225, Altoona 127.350, DuBois 117.875 and Ridgway 104.350.
“I was very pleased with the way the team performed at this championship meet,” said St. Marys coach Irene McCandless. “They did well, although we did have some shaky moments during the meet, but the team was able to keep it together and push through and snatch the second place spot.

Crusaders take AML title over Ridgway

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders won the Allegheny Mountain League boys' basketball championship with a 65-55 victory over Ridgway Saturday night in the Dutch Oven at St. Marys Area High School.
It is Elk County Catholic's second consecutive league championship and capped a week in which the Crusaders defeated Brookville, Bradford, DuBois Central Catholic and Ridgway.

Lady Wolves successfully defend AML title, beat ECC 40-39

ST. MARYS - Ashley Wilson’s foul shot with three seconds remaining gave the Kane Lady Wolves a 40-39 victory over the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders and the Allegheny Mountain League championship Saturday night at the St. Marys Area High School.
The game was a back-and-forth affair for most of the evening. The Lady Crusaders held a 39-37 lead with 51 seconds left. A field goal by Kane’s Drew Victory tied the game at 39 with 34 seconds left, setting up Wilson’s foul shot.

Crusaders reach AML finals with 49-42 OT win

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to tonight’s Allegheny Mountain League championship game by defeating the DuBois Central Cardinals 49-42 in overtime Friday at the ECCHS gym.
The Crusaders will meet the Ridgway Elkers who defeated the Johnsonburg Rams 56-38 last night at Ridgway for the league title. The game is set for 8 p.m. at St. Marys Area High School.

Lady Crusaders advance to AML Title Game

DuBOIS - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders jumped out to an early lead on Friday evening in the AML semifinal game against the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals and never looked back, as they won by a 40-29 score to advance to the championship game tonight at St. Marys Area.
The Elk Catholic girls were the No. 2 team out to the AML North and the DuBois Central Catholic girls were the No. 1 team out of the AML South.

Lady Dutch overpower Ridgway for win No. 21

RIDGWAY – Backed by a 23-point performance from senior Kayla Hoohuli, the visiting Lady Dutch (21-1) nearly doubled Ridgway's (1-21) output Friday night in a 70-37 victory over the Lady Elkers.
"I thought we ran the court pretty well and played man-to-man defense very well," said St. Marys head girls' varsity basketball coach Bob Swanson after capping off a 21-1 season. "We tried a couple zones but Ridgway shot the ball well [Friday night] and I think they're a much-improved ball club.

Lady Dutch improve to 20-1, beat Ramettes 45-30

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team raised their record to 20-1 on the season with a 45-30 victory over the Johnsonburg Ramettes last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven on Senior Night.
The Lady Dutch opened a 16-5 lead after the first quarter and coasted the rest of the way to their 10th straight win.
“I was happy that we won, but I wasn’t real happy with the way we played. The intensity wasn’t there and we didn’t handle the ball real well,” said St. Marys coach Bob Swanson.
“On the bright side, a lot of kids saw some valuable action,” he added.

Johnsonburg Rams knock off Dutchmen 47-45

JOHNSONBURG – The Rams got 27 total points from their two departing seniors on Senior Recognition Night en route to a 47-45 victory over visiting St. Marys.
Facing a 1-point deficit after three quarters of play, the Rams were able to claw their way back to secure the win.
Despite giving up a score to St. Marys’ Jordan Weinzierl to open up the fourth quarter with the Dutch on top 36-33, Johnsonburg head boys’ varsity basketball coach Bill Shuey said he did not count his team out of the contest.
