The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch tennis team successfully defended their District 9 Class AA team title Wednesday when they defeated the Elk County Catholic Crusaders by a 4-1 score in a match played at Benzinger Park.
‚ÄúIt was a very, very good match. The boys did well,‚ÄĚ said St. Marys coach Sue Lepovetsky. ‚ÄúWe spent a long time preparing for this, especially with the weather.‚ÄĚ
‚ÄúIt‚Äôs nice to see the team repeat as District 9 champions,‚ÄĚ she added.
The Dutch went up 1-0 when Brandon Romain defeated Ben Wortman 6-1, 6-2 at second singles.
The Elk County Catholic Crusaders held on to defeat the Bradford Owls by an 8-6 score Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park.
After five innings of play, ECC held an 8-1 lead. The Owls scored four in the sixth and one in the seventh, making the final score 8-6.
‚ÄúWe held on to win that one,‚ÄĚ said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt.
‚ÄúRick (Pearsall) came in to finish it, but it was our timely hitting that won the game. Joe McLaughlin had a clutch two-run double in the fifth inning,‚ÄĚ he said.
The Lady Crusaders picked up their 11th win of the season on Tuesday afternoon at Benzinger Park as they defeated the visiting Brockway Lady Rovers by a 4-0 score. Taylor Schlimm pitched a one-hit shutout for the Lady Crusaders.
Schlimm faced only 24 batters in the game as she recorded five strikeouts while walking none. The only hit against Schlimm was a third-inning single. The other two girls who reached base against Schlimm got on on infield errors.
A. Wright took the loss for the Lady Rovers as she gave up four runs on six hits, struck out one and walked three.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader tennis team edged the DuBois Area Beavers by a 5-4 score in a match played at the Benzinger and Memorial Park courts Tuesday on Senior Day for the Crusaders.
‚ÄúThis was a high-quality win for us today. DuBois has such a talented group of athletes on their team and are well-coached. We definitely had to fight hared to earn the ‚Äėw‚Äô today,‚ÄĚ said ECCHS coach Nick Caggiano.
At first singles, Trey Gilmore of DuBois beat Shane Mancuso 6-3, 6-1.
At second singles, Ben Wortman of ECC beat Alex Davis 6-3, 6-2.
DuBOIS - St. Marys Area‚Äôs Brandon Romain won the District 9-AA Singles Tennis Championship Monday afternoon at the DuBois Area High School courts.
Romain defeated DuBois Central‚Äôs David Gangeware 6-1, 6-1 in the championship match.
Brandon started the day by defeating Brockway‚Äôs Fabio Fortunato 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Romain beat DuBois Central‚Äôs Kevin Blakely 6-2, 6-0 to reach the finals.
Romain‚Äôs teammate Keith Meyer lost in the quarterfinals to Elk County Catholic‚Äôs Ben Wortman 6-4, 3-6, 0-6.
Wortman lost in the semifinals to DCC‚Äôs Gangewere 6-2, 6-3.
Rachel Ginther pitched a no-hitter on Monday afternoon at the St. Marys Area softball field against the visiting Brookville Lady Raiders. The Lady Dutch won the game in five innings by a 12-0 score. The victory was the 10th of the season for the Lady Dutch.
Ginther was one pitch away from a perfect game, having retired 14 straight batters before issuing a walk to the 15th batter after running the count to 3-2.
"Rachel was definitely in command of her pitches today," said Coach Manny Gerarge of the Lady Dutch. "She was in a zone, as she was throwing strikes."
BROOKVILLE ‚ÄĒ St. Marys Area‚Äôs Ryan Uhl reared back and fired, unleashing a fastball that Brookville's Brandon Bietz couldn't catch up to in the fifth inning Monday in Brookville.
Uhl fanned 12 Brookville (2-8) batters and picked up his first career no-hitter during the Flying Dutchmen‚Äôs (6-7) 12-0 win in five innings.
He missed hurling a perfect game after walking the Raiders' Seth Connor in the fourth inning.
Uhl could hardly hide his excitement after the game.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team captured the 2011 Elk County Baseball Tournament crown Saturday afternoon at Berwind Park by defeating the Johnsonburg Rams by a 10-6 score in the title game.
The Crusaders were able to score at least one run in five of the six innings at the plate.

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team took third place in the Elk County Baseball Tournament by defeating the Ridgway Elkers by a 10-0 score in six innings Saturday at Berwind Park.
The Dutch used the one-hit pitching of Nate Geist to record the victory over Ridgway. Geist went the distance for the Dutch, giving up only one hit--a single in the top of the sixth-- walking four, and striking out six.
D.J. Skraba started on the mound for Ridgway, going 5 1/3 innings and giving up 11 hits, walking two and striking out three. Zack McKnight faced two batters,giving up two hits.
St. Marys used a dominating pitching performance and powerful hitting in a 7-0 win over Elk County Catholic in the championship game of the Elk County Softball Tournament Friday at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway.
"The girls came to play," St. Marys coach Manny Gerarge said. "The girls wanted it, they went out and gave 100 percent. We tell them to leave it on the field and they did."
Rachel Ginther had 13 strikeouts and two walks in a 1-hit shutout. She had a no-hit bid going for 5 and 2/3 innings until a double from ECC's Anna Hawkins ended that attempt.
