ECC’s Megan Dornisch top seed in shot put at PIAA meet

A total of 20 local athletes will be competing this weekend in the PIAA track and field championships set for Shippensburg University.
Elk Catholic will be represented by 12 athletes while St. Marys Area will have eight athletes competing.
Elk Catholic’s Megan Dornisch will be the top seed in the girls’ AA shot put with a mark of 44’4.75”. Megan is the defending state champ in this event. She is seeded second in the girls’ AA discus with a throw of 134’10”.
Kennedy Weisner of ECC is seeded second in the 800 run with a time of 2:17.81 and third in the 1600 run with a time of 5:07.26.

SMA’s Hansen and Wiesner win D9-AA doubles crown

The St. Marys Area duo of Nathan Hansen and Dylan Wiesner captured the District 9 Class AA Doubles Tennis Tournament held Friday at DuBois Area High School.
Hansen and Wiesner defeated teammates Thomas Murmann and Keith Meyer in the championship match in three sets. Hansen and Wiesner won the first set 6-4. Murmann and Meyer won the second set 7-6 (8-6). The third set went to Hansen and Wiesner 7-6 (9-7).

Elk Catholic wins District 9-AA Track & Field titles

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders and Lady Crusaders both claimed District 9-AA Track and Field titles on Friday afternoon at the Kane Area High School Track and Field complex.

Lady Dutch softball edges Lady Crusaders 1-0 in pitcher's duel

St. Marys Area’s Rachel Ginther’s single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Kali Quagliani from second base, giving the Lady Dutch a 1-0 victory over the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders Friday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.
Friday’s game was a pitcher’s duel between Rachel Ginther of the Lady Dutch and Taylor Schlimm of the Lady Crusaders. Ginther went the distance for St. Marys, giving up two hits and striking out 14. Schlimm went the distance for Elk Catholic, giving up three hits and striking out six.

Crusaders defeat Dutchmen 4-2

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders defeated the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen 4-2 in a cross-town rivalry game played Friday afternoon at Berwind Park.
"In a cross-town rivalry game you never know what's going to happen," said ECCHS coach Fr. Eric Vogt. "We bring out the best in them and they bring out the best in us. It's been that way for years."
Jack Herzing started on the mound for the Crusaders and worked five innings, giving up four hits, walking two, and striking out six. Ben Daghir worked two innings of relief, giving up one hit, walking one, and striking out two.

SMA’s Schreiber, Woelfel win 9-AAA titles

BROOKVILLE - Two members of the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch track and field team captured their respective District 9 track and field championship Thursday at the D9-AAA track and field championships held at Brookville Area High School.
Trenton Schreiber and Gideon Woelfel will advance to the PIAA Class AAA track and field championship scheduled for May 26, 27 and 28 at Shippensburg University. Also advancing will be Brian Merritt.

Lady Dutch take doubleheader from Bradford Area

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team picked up two victories on Thursday afternoon at the St. Marys Area softball field as they took a doubleheader from the visiting Bradford Lady Owls. The Lady Dutch took the opening game by an 11-0 score in five innings, then won the nightcap by a 19-0 score in three innings.

Crusaders down Cardinals 17-1

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders downed the DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals 17-1 in four innings on Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park, winning the game on a walk-off double by Ben Daghir.
Pat Brennen went the distance for the Crusaders, working all four innings and giving up one hit, walking four, and striking out five.
"I thought Pat pitched a pretty reasonable game. He pitched pretty well for four innings. We just got some breaks and took advantage of them. We got some runs across the board," said ECCHS coach Fr. Eric Vogt.

Elk Catholic holds Spring Athletic Awards program

The annual Spring Athletic Awards program for the Elk County Catholic High School spring sports athletes was held on Tuesday evening in the high school auditorium.
The evening opened with invocation by Father Ross Miceli, followed by the welcome by Athletic Club President Chris Schneider. Principal Sandy Florig gave an overview of the evening’s program, followed by the acknowledgements by Athletic Director Aaron Straub.

Dutchmen down Coudersport Falcons 11-1

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team improved to 9-8 on the season with an 11-1, five-inning victory over the Coudersport Falcons Monday at Berwind Park.
Monday was the completion of a suspended game that began on April 26. That game was halted in the bottom of the first inning with one out and St. Marys up 2-0.
