St. Marys Area swim teams split with DuBois squads

ST. MARYS - The St. Marys Area High School swim and dive team held their last meet before the halfway mark when they met the DuBois Beavers at home on Thursday night. The evening was not short on excitement, as it took until the very last event to determine the winner of the girls’ meet, with the Lady Dutch falling short by only four points with a final score of 92-88.

Smethport wrestlers edge Flying Dutchmen 37-32

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling squad suffered a tough 37-32 loss to the Smethport Hubbers Thursday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Hubbers were able to move out to an 18-0 lead. The Dutch battled back to cut the Hubber lead to 31-20. Dutchman Jimmy Antonelli picked up a pin at 215 and Kevin Hoy recorded a pin at 285 to give the Dutch the 32-31 lead. Unfortunately, Smethport picked up a forfeit win at 103 pounds to win the match.
“We just didn’t do the job tonight that we needed to do,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra. “We couldn’t overcome the bonus points.”

Straub becomes winningest D-9 coach

On Wednesday night Aaron Straub became the winningest boy's coach in District 9 history last evening when the Crusaders defeated the Bradford Owls for his 639th victory on the boys' side of coaching. Coach Straub also has 27 victories as the head coach of the Lady Crusaders. Straub took over the title as the winningest coach from Don Stemmerick of Union High School.
Coach Straub is in his 29th season as the head coach of the Crusaders. He took over as the head coach at Elk County Catholic (Christian) in the 1982-83 season.

SMA gymnasts record fourth win of the season

The St. Marys Area gymnastics team recorded their fourth win of the season last night as they defeated the Ridgway squad by a 129.2250 to 108.7750 score at the St. Marys Area Middle School gym.
Molly Eshbach set a new school record on the vault last night with a score of 9.3500.
“The team brought it all tonight. The kids are finally hitting their beam routines and are improving on their bar routines, which is significantly making a difference in our team score,” said St. Marys coach Irene McCandless.

Crusaders top Bradford Owls 56-47 in D9 play

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders recorded a 56-47 victory over a very scrappy Bradford Area High School squad on Wednesday evening at the Aaron J. Straub Gymnasium on the Elk Catholic Campus. The game was a District Nine League encounter and upped the ECCHS record in the league to 3-1, while knocking Bradford back to 1-4.
Last night's win was also a milestone win for ECCHS Coach Aaron Straub, as it was his 639th win on the boys' level, making him the winningest coach in District Nine history.

Clearfield wrestlers down Dutchmen 37-32

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling team saw their record slip to 5-6 on the season with a tough 37-32 loss to the Clearfield Bisons Tuesday night at Clearfield.
The Dutchmen were able to win seven of the 11 bouts wrestled. However, they gave up three forfeits due to sickness and injury.
“I knew going into tonight was going to be tough for us to win, especially when you are forfeiting three weight classes. We are a bit banged up and sick and need to get everyone back and healthy,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra.

Clearfield swim teams sweep St. Marys Area squads

CLEARFIELD - It was a different kind of challenge for the St. Marys Area Swim & Dive team when they traveled to Clearfield to take on the Bisons for the first time this season Monday night. Despite dropping both meets, the Dutchmen and Lady Dutch came ready to compete with the girls, taking seven of 11 events, while the boys won one event. The loss is the first for the Dutchmen,who are now 3-1 this year, while the Lady Dutch’s record is 2-2.

Lady Crusaders defeat Kane Lady Wolves 49-46

The Lady Crusaders of Elk County Catholic avenged an early-season loss at Kane by recording a thrilling 49-46 victory over the Kane Area Lady Wolves on Monday evening at the Aaron J. Straub Gymnasium on the Elk Catholic Campus in an AML game. This was only the second loss of the season for the Lady Wolves of Kane.
The Lady Crusaders were defeated 55-35 early in December at the Kane gym, but rebounded to record the three-point victory on Monday at their home gym.

Lady Dutch use strong third quarter to down Ridgway 66-19

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch used an 18-0 run to start the second half on their way to a 66-19 non-league victory over the Ridgway Lady Elkers last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Dutch led 19-6 after the first period and held a 23-10 lead at the half. The Lady Dutch connected on six straight three-pointers to break the game open and take a 51-10 lead with 1:15 left in the third period.
“We shot the ball well and played good defense,” said St. Marys coach Bob Swanson.
Swanson noted that his squad hit 47 percent from the two-point range and 30 percent from the three-point range.

SMA swim teams split with Bradford squads

ST. MARYS - The St. Marys Area High School Swim and Dive Team split their home meet last night with the Bradford Owls. The Dutch won their portion 99–80, while the girls dropped their record to 2-1 with a 113-70 loss. The win brings the Dutchmen’s record to 3-0.
Leading the way for the Dutchmen was Corey Koss, who won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. Koss also was on the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay, along with teammates Alex Renwick, Ryan Struble and Jeffrey Moore.
