The St. Marys Legion baseball team improved to 6-0 on the season with a 5-2 victory over the Bradford Legion Friday night at Berwind Park.
Ben Daghir went the distance for the St. Marys squad, as he scattered eight hits while striking out 13.
St. Marys had seven hits in the contest, led by Ricky Pearsallâ€™s three-for-three night with a triple, a double and a single. Jordan Weinzierl doubled while Kevin Hoy, Eric Wehler and Nate Geist all singled.
â€śRicky (Pearsall) had a good night at the plate, which he has been doing all season,â€ť said St. Marys manager Fran Pasi.
The St. Marys Legion baseball team came from behind last night to defeat the Smethport Legion by a 10-8 score in an Elk County Legion Baseball League game played at Berwind Park.
After four innings of play, Smethport held an 8-4 lead over St. Marys. The locals scored six runs in the fifth and sixth innings to record the victory.
â€śThe first inning was disastrous for us. We just didnâ€™t look good defensively,â€ť said St. Marys manager Fran Pasi. â€śDonâ€™t ask me what it takes to get us over the first inning hump.
The St. Marys American Legion Baseball team opened their season Wednesday night with a 6-4 victory over the Bradford Legion at Berwind Park.
â€śI thought the team played well together for their first game of the season,â€ť said St. Marys manager Fran Pasi. â€śBradford hit the ball hard against our pitching.â€ť
Bradford had 11 hits in the contest. Kevin Hoy started on the mound for St. Marys and worked three innings, giving up nine hits and striking out three. Ryan Uhl worked the final four innings, giving up two hits, walking three and striking out seven.
BROCKWAY - The Serra Catholic Eagles ended the Elk County Catholic Crusader season Monday in the first round of the PIAA Class A tournament by an 11-5 score.
The game was played at the Brockway Area High School field.
The Eagles took advantage of a four-run first inning and a five-run sixth inning to record the victory. The Crusaders rallied for three runs in the home half of the seventh, but it was a little too late.
BRADFORD - The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team successfully defended their District 9 Class A championship Thursday by defeating the Coudersport Falcons by a 4-2 score in a game played at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
All the runs scored in the game came in the fourth inning as ECC scored four in the top half of the inning and the Falcons scored two in the home half of the inning.
â€śThat was another great high school baseball game,â€ť said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt. â€śAll the runs came in one inning.â€ť
BROCKWAY - The Punxsutawney Chucks handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch a 6-4 setback on Wednesday in the District 9-AAA championship game held at the Brockway Area High School softball field.
St. Marys fell behind early in the game, then rallied to grab the lead by a single run, but Punxsutawney regained the momentum and lead to eventually win the game by a 6-4 margin.
BROCKWAY - The Punxsutawney Chucks defeated the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen by a 10-5 score Wednesday in the District 9 Class AAA championship game played at Brockway Area High School.
Punxsutawney advances to the PIAA Class AAA tourney, which opens Monday. They will take on the District 7 runner-up.
In Wednesdayâ€™s game, the Chucks came up with eight runs on four hits and an error in the fourth inning to break the game open.
BROCKWAY - The Ă‰lk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to the District 9 Class A championship game by defeating the Clarion Bobcats by a 2-0 score in a semifinal game played at Brockway Area High School.
The Crusaders will play the Coudersport Falcons, 6-4 winners over the Brockway Rovers, on Thursday at a site and time to be announced.
BROCKWAY - The curtain came down on the 2011 softball season for the Lady Crusaders of Elk County Catholic on Tuesday afternoon when they were defeated by the Clarion Area High Lady Cats by a 9-7 score in the District 9-A semifinals at the Brockway field.
The Lady Crusaders trailed 9-2 going into the top half of the seventh inning and made a gallant effort to pull the game out, cutting it to 9-7 with two runners on bases before the final out of the game was recorded to give the Lady Cats a hard-earned 9-7 victory.
Elk County Catholic senior Megan Dornisch successfully defended her PIAA Class AA shot put championship on Saturday by winning the 2011 crown.
The PIAA track and field championships were held Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University.
Megan won the 2011 event with a throw of 44â€™8â€ť. Aubree Ray of Middletown took second with a throw of 40â€™1.25â€ť. Dornisch won her 2010 shot put title with a throw of 45â€™8.25â€ť.
