CLARION - The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team captured the 2010-11 District 9 Class AAA basketball championship Saturday with a 49-37 victory over the Bradford Owls in a game played at the Waldo Tippin Gymnasium at Clarion University.
CLARION - The Elk County Catholic Crusaders used an 11-0 third-quarter run to defeat the Union Knights by a 51-39 score in the District 9 Class A championship game played at Waldo Tippin Gymnasium at Clarion University Saturday night.
The first half of Saturdayâ€™s title game was an extremely low-scoring affair. Elk led 3-2 after the first eight minutes of play and 11-9 at the half.
The third period was the difference in the contest, as the Crusaders outscored the Knights 24-14 to open a 12-point lead, 35-23, with eight minutes remaining.
CLARION - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders earned the District 9-A third spot in the PIAA playoffs on Saturday as they defeated the Clarion Lady Bobcats by a 42-34 score in the 9-A consolation game at Clarion University.
Elk County Catholic's defensive effort can be attributed to the victory, as they held the Clarion girls to just 34 points. Elk's offense once again struggled as they shot a very poor percentage from the field at 10 of 58 (a little over 17 percent).
The St. Marys Area gymnastics team competed at the PA Classic Gymnastics Team Championship Friday and Saturday. The event was held at Chambersburg.
The Dutch squad placed second in the bronze division with 125.576 points. Altoona won the division with a total of 128.183 points, followed by St. Marys, Hanover 115.817 and DuBois 115.659.
The St. Marys squad was bumped to the bronze division and was seeded first in this division.
â€śAlthough we ended up being down a team member, the team did a nice job trying to keep up the momentum,â€ť said St. Marys coach Irene McCandless.
CLARION - The Elk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to the District 9 Class A championship game with a 58-47 victory over the DuBois Central Cardinals in a game played at the Waldo Tippin Gymnasium at Clarion University.
The Crusaders will now meet the Union Knights Saturday night at 8 p.m. at Clarion University for the D9-A title. DuBois Central will square off against North Clarion at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the consolation game set for Clarion University. Union got by North Clarion 49-47 last night at CUP.
BROOKVILLE - The Damsels of Union High School handed the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders a 38-35 setback on Tuesday evening in the District 9-A semifinal playoff game at the Brookville Area High School.
The Damsels held a three-point lead with 3.1 seconds remaining in the game with the Lady Crusaders getting the ball out of bounds under the Union bucket. Anna Hawkins threw a half-court pass to Karly Carnovale, who took one step, then threw up a 30-some-foot shot which went in and out of the hoop as time ran out, giving the Damsels the victory.
Six members of the St. Marys Area gymnastics squad competed in the PA Classic Individual Meet held at Moon Township last Friday and Saturday.
In the bronze divisions, Michaela Sorg competed in the all-around and placed fifth on vault with an 8.45. Mackenzie Neureiter competed in vault, beam and floor.
In the silver division, Megan Longhi competed in the all-around and placed 10th on the vault with an 8.733. Abby Wittman competed on the vault, while Justin Huey tied for fourth on the vault and placed seventh in the uneven bars.
CLARION - The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestlers captured three individual District 9 Class AAA championships Saturday night at Clarion Universityâ€™s Waldo Tippin Gymnasium.
Michael Brennen at 160 pounds, Joe McLaughlin at 189 pounds and Kevin Hoy at 285 pounds, won their respective weight class titles and advance to this weekendâ€™s Northwest Regional Tournament set for the Altoona Area High School Field House.
The Elk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to the semifinals of the District 9-A Tournament with a thrilling 55-52 victory over the Coudersport Falcons on Saturday night at the Aaron J. Straub Gym at Elk Catholic.
The Crusaders tied the game at 47-all on a Tyler Herzing trey with 17 seconds left in regulation. The Elk County defense then prevented the Falcons from getting a good shot off, thus forcing the game into overtime. In the overtime period the Crusaders outscored the Falcons 8-5 (six by Pearsall and two by Simons) to lock up the win and advance on in the playoffs.
The St. Marys Area swimming teams placed second (Dutchmen) and third (Lady Dutch) at the 2011 District Nine League Swimming and Diving championships held at the St. Marys Area High Natatorium on Friday and Saturday.
