The St. Marys American Legion Post 103 squad picked up a pair of victories over Port Allegany on Saturday in a doubleheader played at Berwind Park. St. Marys won the first game 10-0 in five innings, and went on to take a six-inning 15-5 win in the nightcap.
The victories snapped a three-game skid by St. Marys, who dropped a pair of contests to Wilcox earlier in the week and then fell to Smethport on Friday evening.
The St. Marys Little League softball Major League All-Stars lost a close game to DuBois 2-1 on Thursday evening at Benzinger Park.
Rebekka Bauer went the distance on the mound for St. Marys, giving up three hits, walking three, and striking out five.
Sarah Snyder worked the mound for DuBois, giving up two hits, walking four, and striking out eight.
St. Marys' two hits came on singles by Olivia Catalone and Rachelle Armanini.
DuBois was led offensively by Erin Siders with a double. Laura Fatula and Katelyn Bender each also singled.
WILCOX â€“ Wilcox American Legion baseball squeezed its way to a 2-0 victory over St. Marys Monday night at Jones Township Community Park.
Wilcox scored both of its runs on suicide squeeze plays in the sixth inning to break what had been a scoreless tie to that point.
"We had it on a few times earlier, we didn't come through with it," Wilcox coach Jeff Peterson said.
The St. Marys Legion baseball squad raised their record to 4-0 on the season Saturday night at Berwind Park as they used a walk-off single by Mitch Meyer to record a 10-9 victory over the Fox Township squad.
DAGUS MINES â€“Â The St. Marys American Legion Post 103 squad needed extra innings to pull off a come-from-behind victory on Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader against the team from Fox Township Post 511. The contest was played at the Fox Township Legion field, and the Post 103 team rallied for a 10-3 win in nine innings.
Locals host Fox Twp. tonight
Eric Wehler stole home in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the St. Marys Legion a 5-4 victory over the Coudersport squad Friday night at Berwind Park.
Trailing 4-3 going into the home half of the seventh, Nick Burdick singled with one out for St. Marys. He was replaced by pinch runner Jon Dippold. With two outs, Wehler was hit by a pitch and a single by Kevin Hoy loaded the bases. Ivan Wortman was walked, forcing in Dippold to knot the game at 4-all. Before Coudersport realized what was going on, Wehler took off for home to score the winning run.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â€“Â "The only disappointment tonight was that we didn't show our best," said ECC baseball coach Tom Zampogna following the Crusaders' 17-0, six-inning loss to the Bishop McCort Crushers on Monday afternoon in Punxsutawney. "Whether we lost or won isn't so much the disappointment-- it's the fact that I know we've got a better team than what we brought to the field tonight."
Zampogna's remarks summed up the Crusaders' efforts in the PIAA Class A Western Final match-up.
ECC finishes with fine 20-4 record
LORETTO - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team saw their season come to an end Friday afternoon at St. Francis University in Loretto, where they suffered a tough 2-1 loss to the Fannett Metal Lady Tigers.
Elk Catholic ended the season with a fine 20-4 record. They were the District 9 Class A champs and won the Elk County Tournament.
INDIANA â€“Â The Neshannock Lancers may have had more fans in the stands and around the field at Thursday afternoon's quarterfinal contest at the White Township Recreation Complex in Indiana, but the Elk County Catholic Crusader squad made enough noise both on and off the field to keep the momentum in their favor as they pulled off a 4-3 victory to advance to the PIAA Class A baseball championship semifinals.
Jack Herzing went the distance on the mound for the Crusaders, giving up three hits, walking two, and striking out seven.
ECC downs Sto-Rox
BROCKWAY - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class A softball tournament with a 6-2 victory over the Sto-Rox Vikings Monday afternoon at the Brockway Area High School field.
The Lady Crusaders will meet District 5 champion Fannett Metal Thursday at a site and time to be announced. Fannett Metal defeated District 7 runner-up Carmichaels 12-1 Monday.
