SMA hosts Brookville today
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team raised their record to 11-3 on the season Monday with a 15-0, three-inning victory over the Bradford Lady Owls at the SMAHS softball field.
The Lady Dutch used the one-hit pitching of freshman Andria Copelli to record the win. Copelli gave up a single in the top of the first inning. She walked two and struck out six.
Rylee Lundgren worked the three innings for Bradford, giving up 10 hits, walking three and striking out two.
The St. Marys Area track and field teams hosted the DuBois Area squads Monday afternoon at Dutch Country Stadium.
The DuBois squads swept the meet, as the Beavers beat the Dutch 84-65 and the Lady Beavers downed the Lady Dutch 117-31.
For the Dutchmen, Gideon Woelfel was a triple winner as he won the 800 and 3200 runs and was a member of the winning 1600 relay.
Brian Merritt and Trenton Schreiber were double winners. Merritt won the 200 dash and was a member of the 1600 relay. Schreiber won the triple jump and was a member of the 1600 relay.
The Johnsonburg Rams put in another dominating effort on Saturday morning at Berwind Park, shutting out the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen 7-0 to win the 2012 Elk County Boys' Baseball Tournament title.
The Rams spread their runs out over their six times at bat, scoring one in each of the first two innings, two in the third, and three in the sixth.
Johnsonburg assistant coach Jim Holmberg credited his team's good pitching and defense with contributing to their victory in this year's tournament.
ECC hosts Bradford this afternoon
The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team defeated the Ridgway Elkers by a 4-3 score Saturday afternoon at Berwind Park to take third place in the Elk County Baseball Tournament.
The Crusaders, now 9-5 on the season, will play host to the Bradford Owls this afternoon at Berwind Park. Game time is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
ALTOONA - The ECC track and field teams participated in the West Central Coaches Meet that was held on Friday, May 4 at Mansion Park in Altoona. The meet is one of central Pennsylvaniaâ€™s largest track and field invitationals, with over 50 AA and AAA schools taking part.
RIDGWAY - Elk County Catholic softball won the Elk County Softball Tournament with a 3-1 victory over St. Marys in the championship game Friday at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
The Johnsonburg Rams advanced to todayâ€™s championship game of the Elk County Baseball Tournament with a 15-5, six-inning victory over the Ridgway Elkers Friday afternoon at Berwind Park.
The Rams play St. Marys Area, this morning at 10 a.m. for the 2012 crown. The Dutch defeated the Elk County Catholic Crusaders 10-6 Friday in the late game. The Elkers will meet the Crusaders in the consolation game, which is slated for a noon start.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader tennis team handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch squad an 8-1 loss Friday afternoon at the SMAHS courts. This was the completion of a match that began last Thursday but was halted by rain.
â€śThis was a good, quality win for us. St. Marys always is a challenge and we were able to overcome them today,â€ť said ECCHS coach Nick Caggiano. â€śFor the most part we looked sharp. On clay you have to be very aware and alert and I think we accomplished that today.â€ť
At first singles, ECCâ€™s Ben Wortman defeated Michael Fox 6-2, 6-1.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch tennis team advanced to the District 9-AA team championship match by defeating the Brockway Rovers 4-1 Wednesday afternoon at the SMAHS courts.
The second-seeded Dutchmen will now take on the top-seeded Elk County Catholic Crusaders next Wednesday at a site and time to be announced.
At first singles, Michael Fox of the Dutch defeated Joey Britton 6-0, 6-1.
At second singles, Dutchman Evan Lepovetsky defeated Fabio Fortunato 6-4, 6-1.
At third singles, Brockwayâ€™s Alec Bouch defeated D.J. Challingsworth 6-4, 6-1.
