St. Marys cruised to an easy 15-0 win in three innings Saturday morning over Brookville in the first round of the Elk County Softball Tournament. Their only opposition was a steady downpour that at one point caused a one-hour rain delay.
The last time Elk County Catholic and Johnsonburg met on the softball field in Ridgway, the Ramettes came away with a 2-1 win as each team had three hits.
Saturday's game boasted several similarities in regulation until the Lady Crusaders exploded with four runs in the top of the eighth inning to secure a 7-3 win in the first round of the Elk County Softball Tournament.
Cole Peterson struck out 17 and the Johnsonburg Rams scored two runs in the first, four in the second, and one in the sixth to shut out the Ridgway Elkers 7-0 in the consolation game of the Elk County Tournament on Saturday morning at Berwind Park.
Much of Friday's Elk County Tournament opening round matchup between the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen and Johnsonburg Rams was an offensive struggle as the game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning as the Rams were able to push through their lone run. It seemed like that might be the only score of the day as both teams continued to strand base runners, but then the Dutchmen put together an impressive rally in the top of the seventh, coming from behind to win 3-1.
The Elk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to the championship game of the 16th annual Elk County Baseball Tournament with a 12-2, five inning victory over the Ridgway Elkers Friday afternoon at Berwind Park.
The Crusaders will meet the St. Marys Flying Dutch today at noon at Berwind Park in the championship game while the Elkers are to meet the Johnsonburg Rams at 10 a.m. this morning in the consolation game.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader tennis team will meet the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch squad next Wednesday at a site and time to be announced for the District 9-AA team tennis championship.
Both the Crusaders and the Dutch won their semifinal matches on Thursday. Elk Catholic defeated DuBois Central 5-0 at the Benzinger and Memorial Park courts while the Dutch beat Brockway 3-2 at the SMAHS courts.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders took two games from the Brockway Lady Rovers on Monday afternoon in a doubleheader played at Benzinger Park. ECC won the first game 8-0, and the second game 13-2 in six innings.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team rallied for two runs in the home half of the sixth inning to defeat the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks by a 5-3 score Monday at the SMAHS softball field.
What initially looked to be an exciting matchup between two undefeated teams quickly turned into a one-sided rout as the Elk County Catholic Crusaders used a walk-off walk in the bottom of the fourth inning to defeat the Brockway Rovers 15-0.
The St. Marys Area boys tennis team was handed a minor setback on Monday afternoon as the Dutchmen came out on the losing end of a 6-3 match against the Brockway Rovers.
