The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team opened their season Friday by traveling to Bradford, where they defeated the Bradford Lady Owls 10-0 in a five-inning contest.
Taylor Schlimm threw a one-hitter for Elk Catholic while striking out 13 batters.
â€śTaylor was dominant today,â€ť noted ECCHS coach Joe Coroso. â€śShe struck out 13 of the 17 batters she faced.â€ť
â€śOur hitting was slow to start, but improved as the game progressed. It was also very balanced throughout the lineup,â€ť said Coroso.
LEWISBURG â€“Â The two days at Bucknellâ€™s Kinney Natatorium were well-spent for the Dutch and Lady Dutch swimmers and divers when they competed at the PIAA AA State Championships this past wekeend. The team came home with a state medal, three school records, All-American honors and numerous best times as a result of their efforts.
Eleven members of the St. Marys Area High School Swim and Dive Team are at Bucknell University gearing up for the PIAA state meet, which begins today. Swimmers who qualified for the meet are Emma Daghir, Alex Renwick, Andrew Cotter, Corey Koss, Jeffrey Moore, Kylee Proudfit, Matt Hoffman, and Ryan Struble. Divers are Jake Burns, Kyle Pistner, and Tim Mosebarger.
The St. Marys Area Winter Sports Awards Program was held Tuesday evening in Carpin Auditorium.
Student Activities Director Terry Straub welcomed everyone to the awards portion of the evening in Carpin Auditorium.
The first order of business was presenting Michael Fox and Matt Hoffman with their Upper Allegheny Soccer League trophies, which they received for being named to the UAVSL all-star squad following the fall season.
The three co-op sports were the first to present their letter winners.
ECC finishes with fine 24-5 record
PUNXSUTAWNEY - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team was eliminated from the PIAA Class A girlsâ€™ tournament by the Vincentian Academy Lady Royals last night in a second-round game played at Punxsutawney Area High School by a 57-38 score.
The Lady Crusaders got off to a rough start offensively, as the Lady Royals outscored them 17-6 in the first period and 11-10 in the second quarter to take a 28-16 halftime lead. In the second half, Vincentian outscored Elk Catholic 29-22.
ECC to play Vincentian Wednesday at Punxsy
JOHNSTOWN - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders advanced to the second round of the PIAA Class A girlsâ€™ tournament with a 53-47 victory over the Southern Fulton Indians Saturday afternoon. The first-round game was played at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
The Lady Crusaders will now take on the Vincentian Academy Lady Royals Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the Punxsutawney Area High School. The Royals edged the Kane Lady Wolves 62-60 in overtime Saturday afternoon.
JOHNSTOWN - The Elk County Catholic Crusader basketball squad saw their season come to an end Friday evening as they were unable to fend off a late-game rally by the Shade Panthers and were handed aÂ 48-44 loss in the opening round of the PIAA Class A playoffs in a game played at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
"I think we came in with a good plan, but we did not adjust the plan as the game went on. As Wade Walker started hitting threes, we needed to adjust the plan a little bit. I thought we did a nice job of taking [Ryan] Fyock away, though," said ECC coach Aaron Straub.Â
CLARION â€“ The big floor at Clarion University isn't always rough on the Johnsonburg Rams.
Less than one week removed from losing the district title game at Tippin Gymnasium against rival Ridgway, the Rams bounced back in the first round of the Class A state basketball playoffs with a 57-47 win over Bishop Carroll.
The Huskies (14-13) were able to control the game early on but a late rally in the second quarter gave the Rams (23-5) the halftime lead; they extended their advantage in the third quarter and held off a late Bishop Carroll rally for a 10-point win.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team saw their 2011-12 season come to an end last night in McDonald when they were eliminated from the PIAA Class AAA girlsâ€™ tournament by the South Fayette Lady Lions by a 43-36 score.
While the Lady Dutch held a three-point lead at the half, 24-21, a poor third quarter was the big difference in the contest. The Lady Lions were able to outscore the Lady Dutch by a 12-2 margin in the third period of play.
STATE COLLEGE - The St. Marys Area High School Swim and Dive Team successfully showcased their talents at the District VI/IX AA Swimming and Diving Regional Championships held at the Penn State McCoy Natatorium this past weekend. Besides winning medals, the top three positions in each event qualify for the PIAA AA Swim and Dive Championships at Bucknell University on March 16-17.
