ST. MARYS - It was not the opening to the 2012 season that the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders varsity girls' soccer team was hoping for. The DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals left Benzinger Park Friday with a 3-0 victory.
Junior Maddie Meyers accounted for all the scoring in the contest. Her first goal came with 29:18 remaining in the first half on a pass from senior Aundrea Snyder. Meyers tallied again just 50 seconds from intermission.
The Lady Cardinals striker got her final score with 15:09 left in the game.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader golf team handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch squad their first loss of the season in dual match play Thursday at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course.
Elk Catholic defeated St. Marys by a 203-225 score.
Medalist for the day was Elk Catholicâ€™s Elliott Struble with his 36.
Behind Struble for ECC was Jess Jaynes with a 40 followed by Mitchell Struble with a 41, Brandon Schlimm 42, Kristy Hanes 44, Bruno Cavalline and Ben Reuscher 45 and Drew Meyer 48.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team remained undefeated on the young season with a 9-0 victory over the Clearfield Bison squad Thursday afternoon at the Benzinger and Memorial Park courts.
â€śThe weather was nearly perfect for our first home match of the season. Clearfield has a very nice squad. Today they played short-handed, but they played good tennis and it was a nice match to watch,â€ť said ECCHS coach Pete Meier.
At first singles, ECCâ€™s Laira Reuscher defeated Yesh Patel 6-0, 6-0.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch football team will open their 2012 campaign tonight when they play host to the Karns City Gremlins at 7 p.m. at Dutch Country Stadium.
This will be a Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference (KSAC) Big School contest.
The Dutchmen of coach Joe Schlimm are coming off a 2011 season that saw them finish with a 5-4 regular-season record. They ended their season with a 5-5 mark as they lost to the Clearfield Bison in the District 9-AAA championship contest.

The Elk County Catholic Crusader football team opens their 2012 season Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. when they play host to the Smethport Hubbers at Dutch Country Stadium.
This will be an inter-division contest in the Allegheny Mountain League.
The Crusaders of coach Travis Skrzypek ended their 2011 season with a 6-3 record.
The Crusaders won their first two games of the 2011 season by defeating Cameron County 19-6 and Otto-Eldred 48-0. Elk lost to Coudersport by a 12-7 score before recording wins over Port Allegany 25-19, Johnsonburg 34-0 and Kane 13-6.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch golf team improved to 2-0 in dual matches with a 238-254 win over the Kane Wolves Tuesday afternoon at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course.
The Dutchmen were led by medalist Rudy Gleixner with his 43. Gleixner was followed by Justin Beimel with a 48, and Owen Schreiber, Quinn Cunningham and Dillon Gallagher, all with 49s. Jordan Wehler carded a 51 while Kyle Pistner and Garrett Wendel each finished with 52s.
For the Wolves, Dan Park had a 45, followed by Dustin Woodcook 50, Austin Hoag 52, Jamie Rook 53, Andy Bundy 54, Trace Gordon 59 and Derek Bundy 60.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch tennis team opened their season Monday by defeating the Brockway Lady Rovers by an 8-1 score at the SMAHS courts.
At first singles, Amy Orr of the Lady Dutch won by a 10-0 score over Taylor Hepler.
Aubrey Wiesner of the Lady Dutch defeated Anna Brinkley by a 10-0 score at second singles.
At first doubles, Brockwayâ€™s Taylor Hepler and Taryn Licatovich defeated Danielle McCoy and Emiley Challingsworth by an 8-1 score.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch golf team opened their dual meet season Wednesday afternoon by hosting the Johnsonburg Rams at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course.
The Dutchmen defeated the Rams by a 239-247 score.
Johnsonburgâ€™s Cameron Grumley was the medalist on the day with his 36.
For the Dutchmen, Quinn Cunningham and Kyle Pistner shared medalist honors with their 46s. Dillon Gallagher was next with a 47, followed by Owen Schreiber and Justin Beimel with 50s. Rudy Gleixner finished with a 56. Jordan Wehler had a 58 and Garrett Wendel a 59.
The Elk County Catholic High School and St. Marys Area High School golf teams both opened their seasons on Thursday afternoon, competing in the annual St. Marys-DuBois Challenge at Bavarian Hills Golf Course.
ECC finished in first place in the four-school event with 23 points. St. Marys was second with 16 points. DuBois Central Catholic was third with 14 points, and DuBois Area High School was fourth with 7 points. Six golfers from each school participated in the 18-hole contest.
ST. MARYS â€“ It was gradual. It was dominant. It's a Region 8 championship for the Wilcox American Legion baseball team.
Wilcox scored in seven of eight innings and outhit Albion 16-3 to capture the American Legion Region 8 tournament with a 12-0, 8-inning victory over Albion in the championship game at Berwind Park Wednesday afternoon.
