Dutch and Lady Crusaders record wins

The St. Marys Area track and field teams hosted the Elk County Catholic squads Tuesday. The Dutchmen defeated the Crusaders 96.5-53.5, while the Lady Crusaders defeated the Lady Dutch 109-41.
In the boys’ meet, the Dutchmen were led by quadruple winner Brian Merritt. Merritt won the 100 and 200 dashes and was a member of the winning 400 and 1600 relays.
Triple winners for the Dutchmen were Jimmy Werner in the shot put, discus and 400 relay and Trenton Schreiber in the triple jump, 400 and 1600 relays.

Crusaders defeat Kane Wolves 13-7 Tuesday

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team withstood a four-run first inning by the Kane Wolves Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park as they rebounded for a 13-7 victory over the Wolves.
Kane jumped out to the 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Elk Catholic responded with three runs of their own in the home half of the inning. The Crusaders would score four in the second, five in the third and one in the fourth for a 13-4 lead. Kane scored two in the fifth and one in the seventh, making the final score 13-7.

Lady Dutch softball defeats State College 6-1

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball squad recorded a 6-1 win over the State College Lady Little Lions on Tuesday afternoon during a cool and breezy contest at the SMAHS softball field.
State College took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but St. Marys quickly rallied, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead. The Lady Dutch added two more runs in the second inning and one in the fourth and sixth innings in the victory.
"We hit the ball tonight and made some key bunts and moved runners when we had to," said St. Marys Area coach Manny Gerarge.

Crusader tennis team picks up 7-2 victory over Clearfield

The Elk County Catholic Crusader tennis team defeated the Clearfield Bisons 7-2 on Monday afternoon in a contest played at Benzinger and Memorial parks in St. Marys.

Hollidaysburg edges Dutchmen 3-2 Monday

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team lost a tough 3-2 contest to the Hollidaysburg Golden Tigers Monday afternoon at Berwind Park.
The Dutch took the early 1-0 first-inning lead. Hollidaysburg came back with two runs in the second inning to take the lead. The Tigers scored a run in the top of the sixth inning, while St. Marys scored a run in the home half of the seventh on a home run by Branden Tyger.
“That was Branden Tyger’s day today,” said St. Marys coach Tony Azzato. “He threw an outstanding ball game and had a huge home run.

Dutchmen hold on for 6-5 victory over Falcons

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen baseball team took an early 3-0 lead Friday afternoon at Berwind Park and held off a Coudersport rally to pick up a 6-5 victory.
"What was nice, though, was not starting down," said St. Marys Area coach Tony Azzato. "In the five games we've been playing, we've given up 11 runs in the first inning. It was nice today to not have any runs in the first inning and we actually didn't have to battle back."

Lady Crusaders beat Bradford 11-0 in five innings

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team used the two-hit pitching of Taylor Schlimm to raise their record to 6-1 on the year with an 11-0, five-inning victory over the Bradford Lady Owls Friday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
In picking up her sixth win, Schlimm faced 17 batters, surrendering two singles and striking out 10.
For Bradford, Erika Baka gave up 12 hits and walked six.

Brookville rallies to edge Dutch 10-9 in 9 innings

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team lost a 10-9, nine-inning contest to the Brookville Raiders Thursday afternoon at Berwind Park.
Brookville took the lead 7-5 after three innings of play. The Dutch scored four times in the fourth inning to take the 9-7 lead. Brookville would tie the game at nine with two runs in the sixth inning. Neither team would score until the top of the ninth when Brookville was able to score a run on one hit, a hit batsman and an error.

Straub's fishing program under way

With trout season set to begin in the region on April 14, the Straub Brewery's annual Fishing Program was under way Thursday, with 75 tagged trout to be stocked in area waterways.
Don "Flip" Bobenrieth, sales representative for Straub's north central market, began the day by picking up the rainbow trout, ranging in size from 19 to 26 inches long, from the Lake Clear Creek Fish and Deer Farm in Emporium.
"I went down this morning and got them. Yesterday we stocked Emporium and today we'll be stocking the other creeks in DuBois, Johnsonburg, and Brockway," Bobenrieth said.

The St. Marys Area track and field teams hosted the Punxsutawney squads in their home openers on a cold, windy and snowy Tuesday afternoon.
The Dutchmen defeated the Chucks 95-55 while the Lady Chucks beat the Lady Dutch 92-58.
