The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team lost a 10-9, nine-inning contest to the Brookville Raiders Thursday afternoon at Berwind Park.
Brookville took the lead 7-5 after three innings of play. The Dutch scored four times in the fourth inning to take the 9-7 lead. Brookville would tie the game at nine with two runs in the sixth inning. Neither team would score until the top of the ninth when Brookville was able to score a run on one hit, a hit batsman and an error.
With trout season set to begin in the region on April 14, the Straub Brewery's annual Fishing Program was under way Thursday, with 75 tagged trout to be stocked in area waterways.
Don "Flip" Bobenrieth, sales representative for Straub's north central market, began the day by picking up the rainbow trout, ranging in size from 19 to 26 inches long, from the Lake Clear Creek Fish and Deer Farm in Emporium.
"I went down this morning and got them. Yesterday we stocked Emporium and today we'll be stocking the other creeks in DuBois, Johnsonburg, and Brockway," Bobenrieth said.
The St. Marys Area track and field teams hosted the Punxsutawney squads in their home openers on a cold, windy and snowy Tuesday afternoon.
The Dutchmen defeated the Chucks 95-55 while the Lady Chucks beat the Lady Dutch 92-58.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen boys' tennis team lost a close 5-4 match to Brockway on Tuesday afternoon at the SMAHS tennis courts.
At first singles, SMA's Evan Lepovetsky won his match 6-1, 6-3 against Fabio Fortunato.
At second singles, Dutchman Jarrod Lipsey also won his match, 6-0, 6-1, against Joey Britton.
At third singles, Gary Fledderman lost 4-6, 4-6 to Brockway's Noah Serafini.
Eric Uhl was defeated 4-6, 1-6 by Brockway's Alec Bouch at fourth singles.
Dutchman Dalton Gennocro won his fifth singles match 6-1, 6-1 against Jessie Powers.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team picked up their first win of the season Monday when they handed the Ridgway Elkers a 13-8 loss at Berwind Park.
The Dutchmen held a slim 5-4 lead over the Elkers heading into the bottom half of the sixth inning. In that at bat, St. Marys scored eight runs on seven hits and two errors to take a 13-4 lead into the seventh inning. The Elkers were able to come up with four runs on three hits and two errors, making the final margin of victory for the Dutch 13-8.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team raised their record to 3-1 with a 13-0, five-inning victory over the Ridgway Lady Elkers Thursday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.
Rachel Ginther of the Lady Dutch threw a one-hitter as she faced 16 batters, striking out nine and giving up a single to the first batter she faced, Jenni Thomas.
Taylor Roseto started on the mound for Ridgway and worked one inning, giving up one hit, walking three and striking out one. Jenna Hoffman worked three innings, giving up five hits and walking four.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team never gave up on Wednesday afternoon during a tough game against the DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals in a contest that was originally scheduled to be played in DuBois, but was then moved to Berwind Park in St. Marys. Down 12-10 headed into the bottom of the seventh, the Crusaders rallied to come back from a 13-12 victory, with the winning run driven in on a walk-off single by Joe McLaughlin.
SMA hosts Ridgway today
The Punxsutawney Lady Chucks softball team used a squeeze play in the top of the seventh inning to record the winning run as they edged the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch 2-1 Wednesday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.
Punxsy took the 1-0 lead in the top of the first, with the Lady Dutch scoring in the home half of the inning. Neither team scored the remainder of the game until the top half of the seventh, when Punxsy manufactured the winning run.

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch tennis team improved to 2-2 on the season with a 9-0 victory over the DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals Tuesday afternoon at the SMAHS courts.
At first singles, Dutchman Michael Fox defeated Elliott Laparne 6-2, 7-6 (7-2).
Dutchman Evan Lepovetsky defeated Tom Boyer 6-4, 6-4 at second singles.
At third singles, SMAâ€™s Jarred Lipsey beat Jacob Aravich 6-0, 6-0.
At fourth singles, Gary Fledderman of the Dutch defeated Ben Trinkley 6-2, 6-4.
Eric Uhl of the Dutch defeated Julie Fitzer 6-4, 7-5 at fifth singles.
The DuBois Area track and field teams swept the Elk County Catholic squads in a meet held Tuesday afternoon at the ECCHS track and field complex.
The Lady Crusaders lost by a 96-54 score, while the Crusaders lost 114-56.
In the girlsâ€™ meet, Elk Catholic was led by triple winner Kennedy Weisner as she won the 800 run, 400 dash and was a member of the winning 3200 relay team.
Victoria Dippold was a double winner. She took the 3200 run and was a member of the winning 3200 relay team.
