Crusader tennis team defeats Dutch squad

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch tennis team opened their season Monday by taking on the Elk County Catholic Crusader squad. The match was played on the Memorial and Benzinger Park courts. The match was originally scheduled for St. Marys Area but was moved as the SMA courts are not ready.
Elk Catholic won the match by a 7-0 score. Halfway through the match there was a rain delay.

Lady Crusaders come from behind to open season with win

Not only was Monday opening day for Major League Baseball, locally it also finally ended up being opening day for the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team. The Lady Crusaders were originally scheduled to begin their 2015 campaign on Wednesday, March 25 against DCC, but the lingering winter weather resulted in that game only happening Monday. It ended up being worth the wait for Elk Catholic as the Lady Crusaders rallied for a 6-3 victory at Benzinger Park.

The Midwest Regional final was held at Quickens Loan Arena this year. The undefeated
Kentucky Wildcats came in as heavy favorites to move on to the Final Four in
Indianapolis. That didn’t stop Daxter Miles of West Virginia to proclaim that
Kentucky will be 36-1 after the two teams meet Thursday night. That certainly did
not happen. The Wildcats completely overwhelmed the Mountaineers and doubled them up
78-39. In the early game, Notre Dame topped Wichita State 81-70. This marked the

ECCHS honors winter sports athletes

Elk County Catholic High School held its 2014-2015 Winter Athletic Awards program on Tuesday evening, but unlike in past years, only students in the school's own winter sports programs were acknowledged. Students participating in the three co-op sports programs with St. Marys Area High School were acknowledged in an awards program held at the same time across town at SMAHS.

The St. Marys Area High School held their Winter Sports Awards Program Tuesday night honoring those student/athletes who participated in the three co-op sports of wrestling, swimming and diving and gymnastics. St. Marys Area and Elk County Catholic co-op in these sports.

Big Dance Roundup and Look Ahead
Last week we gave you a preview of the tournament and some predictions of teams that we felt could make a run to the Final 4. Well, those predictions were way off and the bracket this writer submitted to his friends and a couple websites sits in about 10 millionth place. All the wise guys were talking about Iowa State and Virginia. Those teams won a combined 1 game. Now we are going to go region by region to see what happened and what we can look forward to seeing next weekend.

St. Marys Area honors winter sports athletes

The St. Marys Area High School held a Winter Sports Awards Program Tuesday night at Carpin Auditorium recognizing those student-athletes who participated in boys and girls basketball and cheerleading.
The student-athletes who participate in wrestling, gymnastics and swimming and diving will be recognized on Tuesday, March 24.
