BROCKWAY - The Punxsutawney Chucks scored five runs in the home half of the first inning on their way to a 6-0 victory over the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch Wednesday afternoon in the District 9 Class AAA championship game, played at Brockway Area High School.
The Chucks used three hits and two St. Marys errors to score those five first-inning runs.
â€śIt was a tough day for us to go cold,â€ť said St. Marys coach Tony Azzato. â€śWe didnâ€™t get the hits when we needed to and when we did hit the ball, it was right at them.â€ť
BROCKWAY â€“Â The St. Marys Lady Dutch struggled to get their offense going and made a few errors on defense on Wednesday afternoon, allowing the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks to take a 7-1 victory for another D9 AAA softball title.
"[We made a few] early mistakes, and we couldn't recover from that," said St. Marys coach Manny Gerarge.

St. Marys Area High School junior Adair Gennocro won a gold medal at Saturdayâ€™s PIAA Track & Field Championships held at Shippensburg University by winning the Class AA 3200 run.
Gennocro won the event with a time of 10:36.22. She was seeded second in the event behind Boiling Springsâ€™ Meredith Speakman with a time of 11:13.99. Speakmanâ€™s seed time was 11:01.57. Speakman finished in second place in 10:47.88.
Gennocro also medaled in the 1600 run with a time of 5:02.16, good for fourth place.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball squad fended off a rally by the Port Allegany Gators on Thursday afternoon to record an 18-8 victory in six innings during a quarterfinal contest at Berwind Park in St. Marys.
"We were up 6-1 and they (Port) kept fighting to come back. They had a big inning, and we let them back in the game, and at least our kids stayed focused enough to keep fighting back and keep battling on," said ECC coach Tom Zampogna.
Senior Taylor Schlimm returned from the injury list to throw a no-hitter as the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team advanced to the District 9-A semifinals with an 8-0 victory over the Port Allegany Lady Gators Thursday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
Schlimm struck out 11 and issued one free pass for ECCHS. Becky Andrus started on the mound for Port Allegany and worked four innings, giving up four hits and walking one. Brooke Roys worked two innings of relief, giving up two hits, walking three and striking out three.
Headed into the top of the seventh inning of the D9 AAA girls' softball semifinal contest at the St. Marys Area High School softball field on Wednesday afternoon, the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch had kept the Clearfield Lady Bisons scoreless and looked set to record a 3-0 victory. Clearfield did not give up so easily, though, as Rachel Hoffman walked and B.J. Bowman connected with one of Lady Dutch pitcher Rachel Ginther's throws to record the only home run of the contest and pull Clearfield within one run of tying the game. St.
The St. Marys Area High School held its Spring Sports Awards Program Tuesday evening in Carpin Auditorium to recognize those student-athletes who participated in baseball, softball, boysâ€™ tennis and boysâ€™ and girlsâ€™ track and field.
Student Activities Director Terry Straub acted as master of ceremonies and welcomed everyone to the affair. He noted that the program would follow the order of letter and certificate presentations, presentation of MVP awards and presentation of special awards.
The fourth-seeded Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball squad advanced to the next round of the D9 playoffs with a 5-3 victory over the thirteenth-seeded Venango Catholic Vikings on Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park in a game that was briefly delayed twice, once due to rain and then again due to thunder.

Cassie Wonderlingâ€™s home run in the home half of the seventh inning gave the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team a 2-1 victory over the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders Friday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.
The Lady Dutch got on the board in the fourth inning to take the 1-0 lead. Elk Catholic knotted the game at 1-all with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Elk Catholic left runners stranded at second and third in the top of the seventh. The home half the seventh featured Wonderlingâ€™s walk off home run to center field.
